prudenceb
What kind of saw do you use to cut closed cell foam most easily and neatly?pru
David M
Pru, I suppose it depends on the application. My only experience is with fitting out the bulkhead. I've not had the need, inclination or skill set to attempt seats or thigh and hip bracing. In my limited experience a friend's band saw worked best. That said, I only had access to it once. From then on after some trial and error I have settled on a serrated bread knife. It does create a mess of foam particles and dust. If I am in one of my persnickety moods I clean and smooth the edges with dragon skin http://www.kayakproshop.com/Harm_dragonskin.html
prudenceb
Thanks - this is for the bulkhead. No band saw accessible, so bread knife it will be!
Phil Allen
Second the bread knife if you're otherwise tool less. BestPhil
eneumeier
An electric carving knife works well, also. I found one at a yard sale for $1. You can borrow it if you like. Liz Edited August 21, 2015 by eneumeier
spuglisi
I agree on the bread knife or carving knife...the foam cuts pretty easily if you have a decent edge. For small adjustments and shaping a surform rasp (inexpensive at most hardware stores) works really well.http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-21-115-Surform-Shaver/dp/B00002X1ZH/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1440194391&sr=8-1&keywords=sureform+rasp
prudenceb
Thanks everyone. If anyone asks this question again, I will respond, "Breadknife!" I took the first advice I got - from David M - and got out my magic marker and breadknife, traced the shape I needed onto a piece of one inch foam, and then had at it with the knife. Worked perfectly with almost no mess.pru
