  1. Tide should be favorable to getting out of and into the harbor. This should be easy paddling conditions but the water is still very cold. Predicted conditions as of today: Air temperatures in the high 60s Water temperature high 40s Winds offshore under 10 kts Seas 1' 9 second Low tide 10:30 am at York Harbort, neap tide Drysuits required. Please indicate interest here and I'll start a group message for the trip.
  2. The tide was perfect for a circumnavigation of New Castle. We were Prudence Baxter, Sandy Blanchard, David Mercer, Michael Hazeltine, William Doucet, and myself. It was a beautiful spring day with puffy clouds and a mild offshore breeze. The 2-3' swell was enough to cause some mayhem in the reefs outside Jaffrey Point. We stayed a little outside. There was a nice push going up the river on the flood and we decided to go up to Pierce Island for lunch. Timing worked out great as we came around Pierce heading for the 1B bridge we picked up a little ebb current and a tail wind as well. If you were "looking for trouble" this was not the trip but a pleasant day on the water it was. Track_5-6-23-94944AM.kmz
  3. This trip is still on for tomorrow, message me if you'd like to join.
  4. Happy to see so much interest. The first trip is likely to be a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Weekends will be a available a little later in the year. I will post a separate thread when I have a possible date.
  5. Forecast remains about the same for Saturday. I would like to change the venue to Rye Harbor to Bass Beach to take advantage of the freshening south wind in the afternoon. I will start a group message and float plan tomorrow for those already indicating interest here, let me know if you'd like to be added.
  6. This year I will be again organizing trips to the Isles of Shoals with Jack Farrell of Seacoast Maritime Charters. Paddlers and boats will be picked up early from the Kittery Town Dock in Pepperell Cove and return there in late afternoon, with parking at the school. This gives plenty of time to explore the islands without the four to five hour round trip paddling. Posting may sometimes be somewhat short notice as I'm inclined to only do this trip in fairly mild conditions, and need to coordinate with Jack. Cost of the shuttle is $50, which includes a gratuity. I will post trips as new threads, so if you're following this forum you'll be notified. Here are links to previous trip reports:
  7. Tentative plan to island hop outside the mouth of the Piscataqua but final route to be determined by participants. Predicted conditions: Air temperatures in the low 60s Water temperature high 40s Winds under 10 kts Seas 2' 9 second High tide 12:22 pm at Jaffrey Point, spring tide Drysuits required. Please indicate interest here and I'll start a group message for the trip.
  8. I can come and bring my Volan and possibly an Explorer too but it doesn't adjust.
  9. It was a cold and windy start from the campground launch but we trusted the prediction that winds would be offshore and diminishing. We were myself, Sue Hriciga, Prudence Baxter, Barb Ryan, David Mercer, Dan Carr, and Ricardo Caivano. As usual, even a small swell provided spectacular action around the rocks, and there were plenty of rocks. Here's the route we took, and if you want a closer look, this link will open in Google Earth: Track_4-20-23-100113AM.kmz One of the highlights of this section of coast is the huge chasm below Cliff House at Bald Head. It was pretty quiet today. We had a nice lunch on the ramp in Perkin's Cove. If Ricardo hadn't been there I could have sold this picture to P&H! Given the time and energy levels we decided to turn back just short of Ogunquit Beach. Here's a few more paddler pictures: It turned out to be a fine early spring paddle.
  10. I will start a group message later today for those that are at least a maybe. Conditions still look good.
  11. Another winter lunch paddle with mild conditions but cold water. Reliable drysuit, appropriate layers, and neoprene headgear are required. Post interest here and I'll start a group message for details.
  12. While the inland temperatures soared to the 80s we were pretty comfortable on the water with a light sea breeze, despite being dressed for 43 degree water. It was a beautiful spring day, We were me, Sue Hriciga, Prudence Baxter, Bill Doucet, and David Mercer. There was just enough small swell to make the rocks interesting but not intimidating. This is a beautiful stretch of coast, with lots of reefs and shallows. The water was crystal clear and you could see the sunlight on the bottom even where fairly deep. Lunch in a very low water Brave Boat Harbor, then on a little farther to check out Seapoint Beach.
  13. We have a quorum! I'll start a group message to those on the float plan.
  14. There is a designated drop off spot here on Harris Island Road: Dropped pin https://maps.app.goo.gl/WBQiGoxXxrxjaptX6?g_st=ic Then you park around the corner on Lilac Lane. It's a nice harbor launch and the tide will be going out so no current to fight.
  15. I put up a float plan: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1v7sEBTcvGh9W6NU4OUlSEovvvxwE7mSr8oblQxqw2p0/edit?usp=sharing
  16. A winter lunch paddle! Conditions are predicted to be nice, very light winds and small waves. Tiny practice surf is possible at the small beach outside York Harbor and in BraveBoat, but unlikely unless forecast develops. Hot lunch is again encouraged! As with all trips in this season, even though air temperatures may reach 70, the water is still barely above 40. Reliable drysuits, layers, and neoprene headgear are required. Post interest here, and I'll post a float plan link if we have a trip.
  17. This trip is cancelled due to deteriorating weather forecast and insufficient participants. Thank you to those who were interested.
  18. Here's the link to sign up: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1v7sEBTcvGh9W6NU4OUlSEovvvxwE7mSr8oblQxqw2p0/edit?usp=sharing I'm hoping to cook a hot lunch on my antique Optimus stove. Join me?
  19. The forecast has increased mid period swell to 2'. I want to have at least 3 for this trip. I will post a link this weekend to the float plan.
  20. Again in the spirit of the Wednesday Lunch Paddles I plan to launch again next Tuesday at 10am from Odiorne. Conditions are predicted to be inconsequential except for the water temperature, which is still around 40. Reliable drysuit, layers, and neoprene head gear are required. Possibly cooking hot lunch. Reply here if interested or contact me if you have questions. I'll be posting a float plan /signup.
  21. This was a short notice weekday paddle on a break from big or windy conditions. The group was me, Jim Snyder, and Ricardo Caivano and Richard Blais. Anticipating the wind to build from the southwest, we decided to head south to Wallis Sands. Despite the small conditions we were respectful of the cold water, about as cold as it ever gets here at 40 degrees. As always, it didn't take big waves to make for beautiful interplay between rocks and water. The small waves breaking right at what little was left of Wallis Sands made for a sporty dismount. Lunch was getting a little breezy but we anticipated having either lee or following conditions on the return. In an odd reversal of normal, when we rounded the end of the breakwater and into Little Harbor, we were hit full in the face by wind and whitecaps. That final 3/4 mile into the southwest wind felt like it took 3/4 of an hour. I found myself looking to the shore to make sure I wasn't going backwards. It was an enjoyable winter outing but looking forward to warmer water!
  22. Yes, still on for tomorrow. We're only two at this point so it would be nice to pick up at least one more. We'll plan our route for minimizing risk due to cold water.
  23. It occurred to me that this is notably The first posted club trip of the year (I think) The Winter Equinox paddle on a new moon spring tide Much like a Wednesday Lunch Paddle, the plan will be determined by participants at the launch. Signup is here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1v7sEBTcvGh9W6NU4OUlSEovvvxwE7mSr8oblQxqw2p0/edit?usp=sharing
  24. Joe, the park website doesn't indicate that it's not. However even when it's open they are not totally reliable. There are a couple alternate launches within a short driving distance if there's a problem.
  25. Launch from Odiorne at 10am, return by 3pm latest to avoid a big muddy new moon low at 5:40. Predicted air in the 40s Predicted wind 6-9 kt Predicted waves medium period 1' Water temperature around 40. These are very easy conditions except for the water temperature. Good layering under a reliable drysuit and neoprene headgear are a must. I will post a floatplan/signup if there is interest.
