  1. Robert and I will be there. Looking forward to it, since we missed last week!
  2. I've always thought there should be a corresponding Men's paddle on the same day - go ahead and post one. I'm sure my husband would love to get out of the chores he planned for this day! There is a teeny little blue arrow to the right of the line of smileys that will show more smileys for you to choose from . . . Cathy
  3. Lanes Cove sounds good to me, I'll be there!
  4. Thank you for all this information. We received it too late (my fault for posting the question so close too our trip), but it's useful if we head back up there. And yes, it's buggy. We are covered in mosquito bites as regular strength Off doesn't seem to work at all. Oh, well, still a good time!
  5. Gary, We just returned and did not attempt any of the Hell Gates, but camping on Beal we could hear your class II-III each max ebb - not something I would want to paddle through! Glad you made it!
  6. Sounds like a great night as always! We're sorry we missed it - we really wanted to come, but just couldn't get the scheudle to work. We were busy packing for our camping trip to the Sheepscot River area this weekend. Awesome (hopefully) trip report to come . . .
  7. Looking for any experience with the Narrows between MacMahan Island and Georgetown Island in the Sheepscot River. What is it like at max ebb and flow and at other times? Also, while we are probably going to only experience Lower Hell Gate by land this time (I made that call with my scaredy pants on), we are curious about Little Hell Gate and what that might be like at various tide flows. We're camping and paddling in the area, so any other suggestions/local knowledge would be welcome. Thanks! Cathy (and Rob)
  8. Gee, can you tell I'm planning a trip? Here's a great article on lightning safety in the backcounty: http://rendezvous.nols.edu/files/Curriculum/research_projects/Risk%20Management%20Reports/NOLS%20Backcountry%20Lightning%20Safety%20Guidelines.pdf
  9. I'm interested. I hope there'll be a rock gardening pod; Blaine told me to nibble and now I want to take a big bite!
  10. Katherin, Would you be able to be more specific about your put-in location - Cashman Park? Are you referring to Cashman Park in Newburyport on the Merrimack? Intention to paddle out the merrimack into the ocean? Cathy
  11. Leslie, Peter, Joyce, Janice, Katherine, Eric, Robert, Prudence and I put in a bit after 5 on a very hot evening. The water temp was 75 and felt great! Some folks practiced rolls, Katherine, Janice and Joyce worked on stroke technique for a while, Peter, Robert and I worked out a vexing rescue situation. Eric worked on rolls, and perfecting the most relaxed position possible in a kayak. Leslie moved about from person to person, chatting and offering her ever hepful guidance and instruction. I lolled about in the water a lot because I could never wait long enough for a bow to come about when the roll failed. Prudence recommended practicing boat thumping to teach myself just how long I can stay under there. So next week, you'll see an overturned boat with two hands tappin' away . . . We all headed in around 7:30 to a mad scramble to get out of the lot before they closed us in. It was a great start to the season! https://picasaweb.google.com/TippyDazey/WaldenPond062012#5756434414117067010
  12. We are planning a CAM camping trip to Jewell at the end of September and are extending the invitation to NSPN members to join us. As mentioned on the recent spring Jewell trip, we are considering extending the trip to four days for those interested. We would like input to see who would take advantage of the extra day, as we are still uncertain whether or not we can take the time ourselves. If not enough can participate in the extra day, we will eliminate Thursday and stick with the three day schedule as has been done in the past. The plan for the four day trip is as follows (tides taken at Great Chebeague Island): Thursday 9/27 (High Tide @ 9:45am): Group #1 beach briefing at 10:00 am for a 10:30 launch from Sandy Point on Cousins Island to an interim island such as Bangs or Crow for snack/lunch (we can discuss stewardship if there is interest) and then continue on to Jewell. Friday 9/28 (High Tide @ 10:34am): Group #2 (same as above). Group #1 is open for a local paddle or relaxing and exploring Jewell Island. Our thought is that a designated contact from Group #1 will keep in touch with a designated contact in Group #2 via cell phone or radio. Saturday 9/29: Day is open for a local paddle or relaxing and exploring Jewell island. Sunday 9/30 (High Tide @ 11:56am): Return to mainland, mid-morning launch around 10 or so. 13. I like the new look and functionality. I'm a big fan of smileys and noticed there's a few new ones! They are now presented smaller, though and a little hard to see. The editing probably works better and is done in a way that most people will like, but when I toggled it back to the old 'html' mode 'cause I like that better, the option to put any formatting in went away, which is fine, but I don't know what you call some of the smileys, so can't put the code in myself. Not important! When you click on Message Boards, there's a 'Latest Files' object in the right hand navigation pane. Was that there before? It seems to have somewhat irrelevant content in it - basically any time someone 'attached' a file. I like the new calendar items object on the right. I'm going to make a typically female comment: The new blue theme doesn't go well with the teal colors in the top banner.
  14. Yeay! Glad this is happening! We'll be there!
  15. If there's not going to be thunderstorms, we may go anyway.
  16. Also, if anyone wasn't able to find it before the trip, here's a link to the currents for Portsmouth Harbor and the Piscataqua. (click on Portsmouth Harbor or Piscataqua): http://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/currents11/cpred2.html Then you'll see on the left hand side of the page, that you can also choose to look at NH. When you click on that, it just shows you the same list you see when you click on Piscataqua. Cathy
  17. It was a swell time. Thank you to all the volunteers who took the time to come out and work with us in such awesome conditions! Video Here Best part is Robert's commentary. We really wanted to tell you the swells were THIS BIG, but the video and Scott says they were only about 5 feet.
  18. CAM is still on, so we'll be headed to windy, wavy Portsmouth. Have fun!
  19. Robert and I would love to do this trip . . . only if CAM cancels . . . waiting to hear from Scott. We'll let you know later today - if you're still going to do this one.
  20. Just realized, this is the 'ladies paddle', and Robert will not be joining me - so I have space on my rack for another kayak. I'm in Tewksbury and willing to pick someone up on the way . . .
  21. Farmer's Almanac shows the full moon in June on the 4th . . . was the intention to paddle just in the moonlight, or specifically with the full moon? The July full moon paddle date and day is incorrect as well - the full moon is on Tuesday the 3rd August is incorrect as well - there is no full moon early in the month on the 3rd, it is on Friday 8/31.
