  1. Cape Neddick Campground will let us park and launch from their boat launch for a $5 launch/parking fee. Last time it was waived because we had dinner at the Lobster Pound but that is never a guarantee. Pay for parking in the campsite office. Ask for Jack. If you plan to eat there, tell him. He may waive the fee at that time.

I have not been there before, but it looks like this Google link should get you very close. Google gives the address information as:

    Cape Neddick Campgrounds

    62 Shore Road Ext

    Cape Neddick, ME 03902

  2. August 3rd was a gorgeous evening at Walden Pond, with a water temperature around 82 degrees.

Congratulations to Les :notWorthy::1631: who stood in her kayak and juggled one ball. I'm looking forward to seeing her juggle two balls while standing in her kayak next time!

Also congratulations to Tom :cheer: who greatly improved the reliability of his roll. He did quite a few of them, including one string of three nice rolls in a row! Good job Tom!

Hope to see you all again next week.

  3. Cape Neddick to Ogunquit Beach ME.

Please post interest here or contacty if you want to attend.

DATE: Sunday, August 7th... 10:45 am SHARP.

This sounds like fun! I'll plan to join you.

Based on the time I'll pack a lunch. Should I also tell my wife not to expect me home for dinner, because I'll be joining friends at the Pound?

  4. Although given the lack of interest so far, I may do something else. Will post again later this week.

I would love to join you a bit later in the day. Around 10:30am BIB is my personal ideal for most launch sites between Boston and Portsmouth.

  5. Without Les :notWorthy::1631: and with scary weather :emweather12::emweather15: attendance was certainly light on July 13th.

However, Eric and I both showed up as the rain stopped :emweather2: and the sun came out. The rule may be 3 to sea, but 2 worked out quite well for rolling  practice.

I even figured out that I can do the Greenland Chest Scull  with my Euro Paddle :yippie:, if I just skip the scull part ^_^ !

Hope to see more of you next week.

  6. Anyone interested in a leisurely paddle among the ledges south of Portsmouth? Low Slack at Little Harbor is predicted at 1300. We could meet at the Seavey Creek launch at 1000, launch by 1030, go play for a few hours and ride the flood back to the cars.

I'm scheduled to join the AMC trip down the coast to Rye and back that morning. I'll wave if I see you. :douglas:
  7. I have a question about the August 2011 issue of Sea Kayaker Magazine article

    Safety

    Storm Islands Rescue

    by Matt Broze

As I understand it, the article says the kayakers had filed a float plan with the Coast Guard. It also suggests that they should have used their VHF radio to update their float plan with the Coast Guard when they decided to change their plans.

It is certainly true that boaters should leave a float plan ashore, ideally with a trusted individual. It is also true that the Coast Guard will want a copy of the float plan if the boater is reported overdue. However, all my Google searches say the Coast Guard does NOT accept float plans until a boater is reported overdue.

Did the Coast Guard accept float plans in the past?

Does it depend on the location? Perhaps the Coast Guard in lightly populated areas accepts float plans?

    Is the article just wrong?

    Just curious,

    Bill

  8. Definitely a great session.

Les looks pretty tall when she stands up in her kayak. :notWorthy: I can hardly wait to see her juggle! :1631:

Peter showed us how to kiss the bow or your kayak. Apparently he really loves his kayak.

Plus plenty of rolling, assisted rescues, and solo rescue practice. :images-1:

I'm definitely looking forward to future sessions.

    -Bill

    P.S.

Rick S. My skin on frame was fine for T-rescues of other boats. No issues at all.

  9. Peter, are you using the NOAA Tides and Current Predictions for June 5, 2011? Using the information I get earlier predictions for slack water in both tides. 9:18AM slack before max current and 2:20PM slack before ebb (Little Harbor Entrance). Am I missing something or reading this wrong?

    Using http://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/get_predc.shtml?year=2011&stn=5595+Portsmouth+Harbor+Entrance&secstn=Little+Harbor+entrance+&sbfh=-1&sbfm=05&fldh=-0&fldm=30&sbeh=-1&sbem=04&ebbh=-1&ebbm=19&fldr=0.7&ebbr=0.8&fldavgd=321&ebbavgd=107&footnote=

    Little Harbor entrance

    Predicted Tidal Current June, 2011

Flood Direction, 321 True. Ebb (-)Direction, 107 True.

    NOAA, National Ocean Service

    5 0231 0511 -1.4 0918 1201 +0.8 1520 1736 -1.2 2120

    So I'm seeing 9:18am and 3:20pm

  10. In a non-NSPN context, an experienced trip leader is raising concerns that smaller boats like my F1 skin-on-frame are not capable of performing a T-rescue of large heavy boats such as tandems. I've never tried to rescue a tandem, so while I have some theories, I do not have any experience.

Who has experience performing T-rescues on large tandem kayaks? Is the rescuer's boat size ever an issue?

    thanks,

    Bill

  11. The only "Bell/Whistle" feature I'd consider if buying a radio, would be an integrated GPS/DSC radio. These can send an electronic distress signal, complete with your position, which gets displayed on other radios within "earshot" of your transmission. For our waters (where VHF coverage is very good) it's almost like having a PLB/GPS integrated with your radio.

    I definitely second that suggestion.

  12. Time to get my drysuit re-gasketed. I can get either ankle gaskets or latex booties. Has anyone had experience...either positive or negative...with the latex booties?

If it is a Kokatat suit, you also have the option of sending it back to Kokatat to have GoreTex booties added. Adding GoreTex booties costs a little more than latex booties, but they are also expected to last longer.

Regarding the potluck. I'm not familiar with the visitor center. Does it have electrical outlets that could support crock-pots?
