  1. I guess my feeling would be that there are plenty of clubs out there that run level 2 laid back paddles, and that's about as far as they go. I'm not sure if we want to compete in that market or if we want to run level 2 paddles that are oriented at bringing members up to level 3. Not saying they have to explicitly be clinics. But there's plenty of level 2 trips that can be done with surfing or rock play or other tastes of the open ocean. Emilie
  2. It rode over and through the waves just fine. I had been afraid it would mostly go through due to low bow volume, but it didn't seem to suffer. As far as surfing in, it seemed to pearl more than I think the Anas Acuta does. So the steeper waves weren't as much fun. The slightly flatter waves were great. And the hull is actually fast enough that I was able to catch back up to one wave I fell off of. The other thing we encountered that day was a good bit of wind (~13kts with ~25 kt gusts). I generally didn't have to use the skeg to correct for weather cocking. I did notice that if I lifted my upwind edge, the wind would sometimes catch it and flip me over. So overall, definitely a fun boat. I will have to say, though, that adding or removing a few pounds will probably change how the boat handles since it will change the water line a lot what with the long upsweep on the bow and stern. And as far as bravery, well, I knew that's the sort of water I was buying the Tahe Greenland for. I bet your skin on frame would be just as much fun. Emilie
  3. Thanks for all the input. The paddle I broke was a nice custom made wood paddle by Fred Randall. So I definitely can agree with the benefits of a custom paddle. However, it sounds like I'll have to ponder whether I need the durability of a carbon paddle, or maybe I should take Doug's suggestion and do both. (Wood paddles are only cheaper than carbon if you don't break too many.) Emilie
  4. I seem to have broken my paddle today. It was a wood greenland stick. And I'm wondering whether to replace it with another wood paddle or with a carbon paddle. Any opinions on why one is better or worse than the other?
  5. Tyson and I will be coming. Does anyone know an address for the visitor center? Or a point on google maps would be just as useful. Emilie
  6. I would definitely agree that the foam seats tend to be stickier and I can't use power from my legs as well. Emilie
  7. Hey! stop trying to steal my boat Emilie
  8. Well, you see, Maine is about as far away as Mt Washington, and we got used to driving there every weekend until the snow melted... GroPro sells a suction cup mount. It stayed on the whole ride, although it was tethered just in case. Emilie
  9. My initial impression is that the Silhouette is less playful than the AA both right side up and upside down. The surfing definitely favored the more maneuverable boat. I need to take the Silhouette out another day for a longer paddle. It does seem to be faster than the AA. Size-wise it was on the high end of the range that I'm interested in. But on the other hand I didn't have problems with being blown around in the wind like I have with some other boats. Note that I am looking for a low volume boat.
  10. The Anas Acuta is kind of high volume ... Emilie
  11. I'm going to be picking up my new dry suit in Kennebunkport Saturday, so this sounds like a great way to try it out. The only issue is that the shop opens at 10AM. Any chance the meeting time could be moved to 10:30? Both Tyson and I would be joining you. Emilie
  12. yowza! I looked up what a Pungo is, and the first site I found described it as follows: That description is open to so many misinterpretations, including those shown in the video.
  13. It looks like a carbon greenland paddle such as Doug has made by http://www.superiorkayaks.com
  14. Don't depend on that. A boat that is good for you may or may not fit her size or paddling style. Emilie
  15. I think Tyson was scared on the first few waves we caught going in. But dealing with the swamped boat, I was more just concentrating than scared. And in response to someone else's question, no, I really had no clue Tyson was out until I was back above water and saw him swimming. Emilie
  16. Ok, we're switching to Lanes Cove. Same time. Anyone know of good parking spots there? Emilie
  17. Can anyone suggest a good spot for lunch in Woods Hole? Any want to join Ty and I for a quick lunch before putting in? Emilie
  18. This is the problem with "experienced" as a measure of skill. I'm sure they were quite experienced leisurely paddling on flat lakes.
  19. IMHO it also makes the front paddler sea sick. Emilie
