  1. I think my above message isn't clear. New put-in time would be 10:00/10:30 latest to be on our way with a predicted high tide at 11:45ish. I was not planning on a ladies-only, but if you want to combine, I will. I am doing a trial run this evening and have explored the creek and Essex Bay pretty extensively this summer.

  2. Katherine, I had a circumnavigation on the calendar for Sat. or Sunday, but was going to change it to Sunday from Pavilion. Put-in time was scheduled for 10:00 as I don't like to do the Fox Creek part at anything but high tide. Let me know if it makes sense to combine the trips. Check out my Calendar trip post, and consider Sunday moving put-in to about an hour later...

  3. And thanks to Rick and all others with helpful information, be it standard procedure or their own experience. I always appreciate those who take the time to share useful information. As readers it is important to separate standard practace from experience, discussion and opinion. So many ways to approach so many aspects of sea kayaking.

  4. What model do you have? How long have you had it? I have the DMC Ts1, in my fourth year. I baby it, but so far no problems. Just clean and dry it every time. When it dies, I guess I'll feel like I got my money's worth, but I hope it doesn't die for a while. It was in the $450 range (from Hunts), which is way more than they are now...

  5. I've always liked the name Nuala, and here is the description, which sounds quite appropriate for the white beauty: It is really a shortened version of Fionnuala (see Fionnuala above) and in Ireland it is more widely used than Fionnuala. Meaning “fair shouldered, exceptionally lovely,” the name has been in existence since the 13th century.

Also, Nuala reminds me of Nautical... ENJOY your new babe!

  6. Chuck,

Here is what the Boat Book says about the Polar:

The expedition-capable Polar is loosely based on the southwest Greenland form, with hard chine and noticable rocker, the hull is quick yet very responsive to edging for maneuverability and course correction. A clipper bow fibes a dry ride and the retractable skeg keeps you on track in quartering seas. I only had it on the Charles, but I paddled it twice and loved the way it fit and felt. It was slightly longer and more expedition-capable than I feel I need so I went with the shorter/lighter boat. the Polar is L: 16.9, W:21.5; 53 pounds.

My Avocet was not low volume, and I was way too small for that boat. I fit the Atlantic LV (and the Polar) much better.

The Atlantic it says... "The combination of shallow-V hull and soft chine provides the perfect blend of speed, responsiveness and predictability...

The Polar felt more "tippy" with the hard chine, but I found it to be a very comfy boat at my height and weight. Didn't fit me as tight at the Atlantic LV, but it rolled easily and was maneuverable. I had been looking at Tide Race Excite S before I saw these boats. The price was much better being a demo (they had already sold their Tide Races)

  7. In August I demo'ed both the Polar and Atlantic LV and bought the LV. I had a hard time making up my mind because both fit me very well (130lbs) and a female employee about my size loved the Polar and a somewhat larger (but my height) male liked the Atlantic. I traded in a Avocet Roto and like the LV much better so far. I saw some reviews if these boats in last year's Canoe Kayak Boat Book.

Oh... my height is about 5' 6.5"

  9. Yes, Joel is doing deep discounts to move stock of all kinds. But he's not moving New England Small Craft (NESC) very far: just to the other, sunnier side of the building (his version of solar heating). He complains he's too old to run a business, which is why he needs to get rid of the stuff rather than move it. But after watching him single-handedly load a 14' Hobie fishing kayak into his pickup, plus assorted other gear, I realize the getting old is an excuse: he really just wants to go fishing.

By the way, while he's moving to Hobies as new boats, he's likely to still sell sea boats on consignment. And he will continue to have all the accessories for sea boats, just not the new boats.

Good to know. Thanks. I'll have to pay him a visit, as I used to be a regular customer and wish I could support his business more than I have recently...

  10. Well, I'm not so sure that 7' waves will actually materialize. Cinnimon Rainbows is showing waves of less than 4' tonight. But, in any case, have an enjoyable paddle and we'll see you another time

I've missed you guys this summer. Am trying desperately to catch high tide today, but would also like to do this... Come watch, hang, catch a couple babies maybe -- ya know? I have a new (used) play boat that I just picked up yesterday...

  11. I'm watching the radar loop now (0615). There's a nasty looking one just south of Worcester that seems headed toward Salem. Once that's past us, things look better.

I'll keep an eye on the radar until it's time to leave (0830) and be at the beach as planned. We can decide there.

Rob, I think I am bailing due to a lot of work and less than great weather. I was going to bring the stickers at 3 for the potluck. Would you rather I drive out this morning to drop them off?
