  1. I'm in, see ya at 10 AM. E-mail me if plans change.
  2. In an earlier life I used to drag my Lightning sailboat on/off beaches using two blowup rollers (looked like fat hotdogs when inflated). They were each about 3 feet long by 9 inch diameter and were made out of a canvas-like material. I bought them from a marine supply store and don't have any idea if they are available now. When partially deflated they would easily stow into a round kayak hatch. Regards from Singer Island FL.
  3. I'll probably be there at 11 AM.
  4. Looks like a nice day. Any interest? Lanes, Greasy Pole or Manchester.
  5. How bout Manchester to Marblehehead on Wednesday 10/25?
  6. In response to several questions in the Knives on PFD post: This is the knife I use. https://www.shop.pacificriversupply.com/dis...74&categoryId=3 It won't come loose during rescue training. I think NESC still sells it. >The knife sure came in handy ... I used it to cut a hole in the sprayskirt to >extricate myself. >>I think sea snips would have done the job. You'd have to pinch the skirt to make a small pouch of fabric, cut that off with the snips, and then use the resulting hole to finish the cutting. Try pinching a tight neoprene skirt while upside down and starving for a breath of air. >>And the dangers of a knife on the pfd are well documented. John Carmody relates the tale of a friend doing a rescue on a panicked novice who gave him a bear hug that dislodged his knife. In the ensuing struggle, the knife blade grazed his throat. It's not a problem with my knife. It can't come lose without squeezing the release mechanism.
  7. Some real-life instances where a PFD knife came in handy: Several winters ago while paddling downstream on the Concord River I collided with a tree branch in shallow water: I capsized to a 90 degree angle (I was locked to the tree branch and the force of the stream wouldn't allow me to rollup or push up off the bottom). My sprayskirt was frozen to the coaming and I couldn't wet exit. The knife sure came in handy ... I used it to cut a hole in the sprayskirt to extricate myself. Once, because I needed to make a VHF call, I anchored my kayak to a lobster buoy so I wouldn't drift into the rocks of a nearby island. A lobsterman (not realizing I was anchored to his buoy) began pulling me and all of his buoys with the winch. Again the knife came in very handy; I cut the 1/4 inc anchor line ... try rolling while you're being towed at a high speed. For fishing a knife is a necessity ...why would you paddle and not occasionally fish? The ability to fish from a kayak might save you from starvation, say, if you get lost in a fog. I frequently use my knife to release bluefish or striped bass, to filet them, to cut lines, etc. The knife is at least as important as a space blanket.
  8. Executive Summary: Wednesday, while trolling for bluefish in very calm water (about 1/4 miles out from Halibut Point, Rockport), I spotted a feeding blitz several hundred yards away. I started a high-speed sprint towards the action; suddenly my bow went up and I began to capsize. I did a high brace and my paddle hit something harder than water. I recovered from the almost capsize and saw a dorsal fin and gray mass in the water. At first I thought I went over a small whale (or a large and lazy shark). When I calmed down I realized that I had run over a large Mola Mola lying on its side. It was about 6X8 feet (probably about 500 - 1000 pounds). I watched it for a about 10 minutes, apologized and took digital stills and videos of this huge fish ... it didn't appear to have been hurt as a result of the collision. Rationale for this post: Under these circumstances should I have used a sculling or low brace instead? Or is this a sign that sea kayak fishing is not a sport suited to me? P.S. Skunked on this and the next day. But I did nail many decent sized blue fish last week and Monday of this week.
  9. I think I saw a dolphin or porpoise jump and never reappear about 1/2 mile out from Folly Point Rockpoint (I was about 200 yards away). Is this possible? My guess is it was small (< 5 feet long). Paddled out to the location and saw sea gulls and terns pecking at a dying dogfish (looked like a fisherman sliced through its head).
  10. SNG Greasy Pole to Greasy Pole: Monday - Friday for Blackburn Challenge training. Five hours or faster.
  11. I'll be there and if the stripers are around I'll troll a lure.
  12. How about Thursday (6/15/06) 10:30 AM at Pavalion Beach Gloucester (Greasy Pole). Call or email to confirm. 781 275 2665
  13. Next week I want to get the cobwebs out and start some weekly fast paddling loops around Cape Ann. While the water is still cool I'd like one or more partners (especially after the recent event *). For now I'll be aiming to do a 4 to 4.25 hour loop (greasy pole to greasy pole). Any interest? *Keith, John and helicopters
  14. Could you add me to the list. Thanks, Leon Granowitz
  15. I'm INSANE, count me in. It's almost cold enough for me to switch from my wet to drysuit.
  16. Not everyone has the power to get this boat up to planing speed. http://www.wetasschronicles.com/FlyakSprint01.wmv
  17. I'm no longer on the INSANE list (at least I no longer get notifications). Would one kind dude or dudette please place me back on the list in good standing.
  18. Launch at approximately noon. Reply if interested.
  19. Hi Bob L, There is a way to do it, but not your way. You made it a different and trivial problem. You can only take one measurement! If you measure the radius of the pool you can't then measure the radius of the patio (center of pool to outer circumference of patio). See response to Mark.
  20. Mark, There are two diameters involved ... the outer diameter (a chord through the center of the pool connecting two points on the circumference of the patio) and the inner diameter (a chord through the center of the pool connecting two points on the circumference of the pool. Your formula gives the area of the pool or the sum of the areas of the pool and patio, depending on what diameter you mean to use. But the question relates to the area of the patio alone. Sorry no beer.
