josko
What's the basic tradeoff between foam core and ribbed paddles? Is one more suitable for certain environments than the other?
Doug
A ribbed paddle is usually heavier and stronger. It also creates a bit more unwanted turbulence on the entry. Usually less expensive older technology.Doug
NateHanson
I don't use my Werner foam core paddles in tide races or rock gardens. They're quite strong, but if you catch one just right, you can snap a blade like nothing at all. I did that once. Now I use a Shuna in those environments. Actually, I'm using a Shuna more in general these days. The weight difference is a couple ounces. And they both paddle nicely. Yes the foam core Cyprus is a bit smoother and quieter. It's a very nice paddle. Just not quite as durable as the ribbed fiberglass Shuna.
