Sources of nautical charts - French Polynesia, Jamaica

Hi, All -

I wonder if anyone knows how to go about getting nautical charts of non-US areas.

I'm contemplating both paddles and sailing in some areas. Specifically I'm interested in Jamaica (paddles) and French Polynesia - sailing.

Does anyone know of good sources? A cursory online search wasn't terribly helpful, except for the electronic variety - looking for paper-in-hand charts.

John,

I've occasionally looked around the internet for locations other than the US and found OceanGrafix to be pretty good.

Also, West marine has the defense mapping agency charts which cover Jamaica:

French Polynesia - sailing.

John, because I don't readily loan out my personal charts of French Poynesia, I will have to accompany you on this arduous journey. When do we set sail?

(It's ALMOSTApril Fool's Day)

PS I believe the audience would welcome your report of this safari, though to qualify, you must at least paddle the tender to the boat!

I'm actually contemplating two trips - one sailing out of Bora Bora and because of my ...cough cough...."navigational background" I'm getting a free cruise from Tahiti to the Marquesas to Puka-puka to Mangareva to Pitcairn to Easter Island as an "expert". Go figure, but I'm not turning it down.

Speaking of that, did any of you see Ken Finks talk at the MITA 25th anniversary. He set out to do a kind of kayak catamaran trip from the Marquesas through the Tuamotu's to Tahiti. The rig looked awfully rickety to my eyes, and sure enough, two days of swell from the Southern Ocean was enough to start breaking it apart. One of the guys on the trip with him got a real nasty salt water infection and they had to throw in the towel on the whole expedition.

John:

I seem to remember that the British Admiralty has been doing charts for some time now, so I checked out their site.

The good news is they have paper charts of Polynesia. The bad news is that the scale might not serve your needs as it seems to be 1:3,500,00--lacking the detail a kayaker might want.

See https://www.ukho.gov.uk/ProductsandServices/Documents/chart_Availability_List.pdf for their list of charts.

More perusal of their website might turn up something better suited.

Cheers,

Scott

Also, for charts, you can google "marine chart agent" and find a number of businesses that specialize in providing paper charts for exotic places. One is Landfall Navigation, but there are a few others. I'd give one a call and tell them what you're looking for. I think you'll find just what you need that way.

While we're on the subject of charts: I need to have ~50 20" x 30" topo maps printed on a waterproof base, suitable for use on a kayak deck. While we plan to use (deck) chart cases, it would be wonderful to find a substrate that does not require them. I've tried out mylar and tyvek as media, with promising but not great results.

Would anybody know where to get waterproof charts printed and what media would work well?

Waterproof printer paper. You can get it on amazon. It's basically thin matte white plastic. I use it in letter size for deck scribbling and printing my notes for courses, but I expect they make it in larger sizes.
