Gcosloy
If you've paddled in Portsmouth harbor one of the seductive lures has always been Wood Island. Great for lunch or just a rest spot. The Lifesaving station which has been neglected by Kittery and is crumbling as I write this is nevertheless a magnificent structure and a link to our past. Men would leave Wood Island in large row boats to save and rescue mariners in distress. The Lifesaving Station was a precursor to our modern Coast Guard. A group has been formed to renovate and take over the responsibility from Kittery as a non-profit. Kittery has responded by voting to demolish the structure. There will be a public forum to discuss this decision May 29th at 6 pm. For more information, check out this link on the Kitterian: http://kitterian.com/group/wood-island-life-saving-station-associationIf you think as I do that demolishing the station will impoverish our experience as kayakers in this region, come to the meeting and speak out or write to the Kittery Town council expressing your views. Paul Sylvester
How much did they ever raise? When the group first formed they were very low on their budget numbers IMO.
