Doug
"Skating Away on the Thin Ice of a New Day" Here's an idea for a way to spend those days below freezing. I noticed these hearty folks on the ice of Lake Massabesic today. I used a Nikon D100 with a 200mm lens and a 2x teleconverter attached. I estimate their distance between 1-1.5 miles away. Doug
cool... ! How does the stand-up fellow stop ?I would imagine he stops the same way as you do sailing.... release the pressure on your sail and skate to a halt. Maybe the ice-flyers that you sit or lay on have breaks. I don't really know but my research since last night on the sport has been interesting. Could be a good project to build one. Hal from Wilton NH, an NSPN member may be able to answer these questions. He emailed me a video of his wife on their ice-flyer the other day. Perhaps he'll share the utube link if he reads this. BillyD
"Skating away --- skating away --- skating away on the thin ice of the New Day. So as you push off from the shore, won't you turn your head once more --- and make your peace with everyone? For those who choose to stay, will live just one more day --- to do the things they should have done. And as you cross the wilderness, spinning in your emptiness: you feel you have to pray. Looking for a sign that the Universal Mind (!) has written you into the Passion Play. Skating away on the thin ice of the New Day." ----Jethro Tull 1974Couldn't resist....love that songgreat pics Doug....amazing from so farBD
Hal
To stop one merely turns into the wind.... maybe several times to bleed off speed. Most sailors have ice cleats on boots to assist in stopping. As Doug said I have s goofy video link. The style of ice boat I use is called and Iceflyer. It uses a standard windsurfing sail, mast and boom. The runners are not like skates, they are sharpened to a point not flat like ice skates.
