midnight
These are two upcoming events for those interested in the Mystic River History that may be of interest: October 19[/b] Middlesex Canal Field Trip - Everyone is invited to enjoy the fall foliage and take part in the Middlesex Canal Museum's 27th Annual Fall Walk! The event is free and will be held on Sunday, October 19 beginning at 1:30 p.m. The Middlesex Canal was constructed between October 1794 and December 1803. It was a massive 27-mile, public-works project that connected the Merrimack River in Lowell to Mill Pond in Charlestown by way of Woburn, Winchester and what is now the Upper Mystic Lake in Medford. The canal thrived for 40 years but eventually succumbed to the advent of rail transportation. Much of the canal is still intact and provides people with scenic glimpses into the country's early industrial history. The October tour will include two portions of the Middlesex Canal in Woburn and begin at the Woburn Showcase Cinema at 1:30 p.m. (Click here for directions to the cinema.) CarpoolingIf you need a ride or if you have room in your vehicle for another person, please contact me at jimkiely1960@yahoo.com in advance so arrangements can be made. Everyone involved in carpooling will meet at MHS headquarters at 12:30 for a 1:00 departure to Woburn. October 22 Lecture[/b]: Life and Death of the Middlesex CanalMHS's first lecture of 2008-2009 will be an extension of the October 19 fieldtrip to the Middlesex Canal and feature Nolan Jones, president of the Middlesex Canal Association. He will discuss the construction, use and ultimate demise of the canal, and the tremendous effect it had on the economic development of this part of Massachusetts. This lecture will be held at MHS headquarters and begin at 7:30 p.m. It is free and open to everyone who would like to attend.
