Labor Day Paddle

Ok, maybe it's nuts to schedule a paddle on Labor Day. L1 easy 6 mi Conomo Point, Essex down the Essex River to the bridge on 133. Lunch along the way and back. Launch at 12:00 noon. SW wind up to 14mi/hr. However helped by flood tide filling the river going and wind at yer back coming back to Conomo. [b]Will boat traffic be huge tomorrow in the Essex? Does anyone have a better idea for a light, no more than 6 mi paddle.

Small Craft Advisory is on for 1:00PM this afternoon on. However, can't imagine that will be a big concern in the Essex River. If anything will considerably cut down boat traffic. Trip is on. So far just two confirmed. Prepared to cut short trip if conditions are unpleasant for anyone. A bad day on the water is better than a good day at the office!

Private protocalls apply: this is a private trip, you are responsible for yourself!

I'll be there - is the put-in same as on NSPN website "essex town boat ramp"?

Laura

The put in is Conomo Point which for some reason is not on the list of put-ins. Here is a map:

From 133 take a right at Harlow St. (Big Red Pub and Bus on corner) Take a left on Conomo Point Road. Put in is small sandy beach on left with blue picnic benches. After unloading park along the road across the street. Launch time is 12:00 Noon

Did you get your answer as to whether the "Boat traffic would be huge in the Essex River at low tide on Labor Day?http://www.nspn.org/forum/style_images/1/folder_post_icons/icon8.gif

Walter based on the conditions we aborted the original trip and decided to go over to the back side of Cranes for lunch and go back to Conomo. Strong winds at her back Lois managed to lose control of her boat and get blown in between two large pleasure crafts anchored and stuck. After being extricated and a little more than shook up, we decided to hook up a tow for her for the trip back. Gusts up to 25k and big boat wakes made for a tough crossing. No more problem with boat control however. Laura, the third member of our group was a strong paddler and had no problem. The answer to your question is yes a little nuts! Thanks for your concern. My original post however did ask for advise and received none. I had opined that boat traffic might be light and that Essex not being the open ocean, conditions might be more manageable. Knowledgeable as you are of your own backyard I assume you never caught the original post in time, since you would have responded.

Well, you learn by doing and seems it was not an epic so a good trip one way or the other.

Consider starting a little logbook to record the data of each trip and some thoughts on what went right, what went wrong, what you learned, what you need to think about. Can become a valuable learning tool. For example, you might conclude that even with a short fetch, wind across a shallow body of water can build steep, short period waves fast that are harder to deal with than you might think. That was a note I made after a lake paddle on Labor Day. It is also interesting to record the differences between the conditions you found with those reported at nearby buoys for future reference.
