EEL
This past Sat. I participated in a fun and lively paddle out to the Sequin Island Light ( http://www.seguinisland.org ) which sits a few miles out from the Popham Beach area in Maine south of Bath. It is a great place to visit with wonderful 360 views as the light and keepers house sit at the top of a substantial hill. Once there it was enjoyable to spend an hour or two as nice places to picnic, you can visit a museum, and take a tour of the lighthouse by the resident guide/keeper. Really something to be able to get a close look at the huge Fresnel lens and walk around the light on the outside catwalk. If you decide to visit the island, check the weather, chart and tides. From the Reid's Park area it is around 5 somewhat exposed miles out and the last 2 or so are genuinely "out there" leaving you to paddle in whatever the ocean has going on that day in combination with the flow of the Kennebec. All in all a great day paddle destination. Ed Lawson
rick stoehrer
it is beautiful. the views are phenomenal...i spent a night there once (it was too dark to paddle back, i swear and besides, the keepers were bored. a little wine, a little cheese, a little food...it's amazing the places you can get if you bring the right currrency) and got the tour after dinner with the lighthouse keepers. to be on the tower rampart looking out at night...that's a cool view. you absolutely want to have the weather and tide though. The current combined with an ebb make a very formidable combination and if you add any swell and wind against that, the entire mouth of the river jacks up and you've gotta be pretty keen to make it through. it can be very dangerous. fun and beautiful but not a place you want to be surprised. the MITA book pretty much has the same warning concerning the mouth, fort popham area.
