EEL
What is the best marker to use for jotting down notes on foredeck and laminated charts or chart cases? Something that does not rub off and waterproof, but can be removed with a simple cleaning agent such as alcohol. TIA Ed Lawson
djlewis
Grease pencil. Look for Listo Marking Pencil -- refillable. They also work great in those waterproof notebooks. --David.
cathyfoley
I like the Staedtler permanent, fine point. They are totally waterproof, and won't come off until you use some alcohol. Staedtler also makes alcohol pens for small touch ups. They don't work well to wipe an entire map case surface. I use an empty Visine bottle to hold a small amount of alcohol and a small rag for wiping. I find these much easier to write with and clean up, as opposed to grease pencil, which works well also. jason
Cathy is the pen that you are suggesting? http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/s...7&cmArea=SEARCH -Jason
Kevin B (RPS Coach)
For the waterproof notebooks, I think the space pens are supposed to work well.
djlewis
Gee, only $15 & up for a pen. Hey, I'll *give* a Listo marking pencil to the first one who raises their hand (I bought a dozen for $10). I've never used a space pen. But if they solve the problem of ink in a normal ball pen not starting right away, I might be convinced to give up soft-point markers after, oh, 30 years! Well, not at $15/each. --David.
Ben Fuller
How well do the good pens hang out in salt water immersion? These sound lots better than the old standby grease pencils that you have to wrap in duck tape to keep in one piece.
jason
I had one for most of a year before it went swimming. It held up I just tended to smear the grease. -Jason
cathyfoley
Staedtler's have a water tight cap that seals well. Never have had a problem.
cathyfoley
Jason: These are the pens that I use. I have bought them at Staples, but I don't think they are a catalog item. The pens have a full black body and a cap that matches the color of ink. http://www.staedtler-usa.com/permanent_mar...?ActiveID=24212

Kevin B (RPS Coach)
I like to use things for multiple activities. The space can be used for all of them, so your price comparison is a bit off.
thief
hey David where did you find the Listos???? rob
EEL
Thanks for the suggestions. After some experiments, it seems plain old Sharpies work quite well and as good as alternatives. Marks do not come off readily once dry unless alcohol is used. Ed Lawson
