jason
Do anybody know of a video that covers the back deck roll? I have the Kent Ford video "The Kayak Roll" that covers the normal roll but not the back deck roll. During last weekends pool session I was able make progress with my offside roll. Hopefully after Saturday's pool session I will need another item to think about instead of my offside. Thus I would like to order a video to get me started. If you don't know of a video but have a web-page or a book would also be very useful. Thanks for the advice -Jason
Michael_Crouse
Do mean a back deck roll like this? http://www.paddlermagazine.com/issues/2001...ticle_125.shtml In this example it looks like your head goes underwater, which is not the roll I've seen. It's too bad the images are so small, I have a small quicktime movie of Chris Thomas doing a back deck roll. It's something I've watched again and again, it's just such a cool looking roll. Chris did it in the Lydon pool a few years ago, I asked him "could you do that again? once more?" about 10 times before I tried it myself, do I couldn't do it. We are talking about the white water roll where your head doesn't get wet, right? This roll would be impossible to do in a sea kayak, too much volume in the bow. Brian Nystrom
...which work fine in a sea kayak. Some finish on the foredeck, as it the link you posted, while others finish on the aft deck. The "standard" aft deck roll that's taught for Euro paddles is the "Steyr Roll". There are multiple Greenland variations which can be done with a Euro paddle as well. markstephens
This is the best online tutorial for the backdeck roll that I have seen. The mouse-over images only work for me in IE. http://www.chrisj.winisp.net/articles/backdeckroll.htm That said, this roll is harder to do in flat water, like a pool, than with the help of some hydraulics like surf or river current. jason
My understanding is that it is also be done in a sea kayak. I decided to learn the back deck roll after watching WW videos. In the video they were rolling up faster than I can setup with my normal roll. I am not intrested in keeping my head dry but I am sure some people are. Thanks for the web page, I will test it out in the pool session Sat. Thanks -Jason
jason
Mark thanks for the link and the advice regarding the use of hydraulics. I have had to use another machine and the web page looks good. (I wish that it worked with Mozilla or Firefox). Thanks -Jason
Michael_Crouse
here's the one where you keep your head dry http://playak.com/images/reviews/liquidski...illsdryroll.mpg I don't think the dry head roll will work in a long boat, you just can't sink the bow and lift the stern like you can in a shorter low volume ww boat. Here are some clips of back deck rolls that should work http://www.kudzukayakers.com/Movies/backdeck.mov http://whitewaterwarriors.com/backdeck_set...oll%5b1%5d.mpeg http://home.comcast.net/~gsgordonjr/kayak/...k_to_C_to_C.mov

Chas
Jay Babina`s " Ist roll " video / dvd is very helpfull. You can get it from Newfound Boats website (NH) or directly from the Outer Island website. Lots of Conn Yak folks in the video as well. Check it out.... jason
Does it cover the back deck roll? On the newfound web site this is the description: " 1st Roll DVD by Jay Babina (designer of the Outer Island kayak, $29.95) Learning the Eskimo roll is every kayaker's dream from the moment they venture out on their first paddling experience. The idea of bringing yourself upright from a capsize is not only unique to the design of the kayak but remains one of the utmost safety skills that the sea kayaker can learn. "1st Roll" demonstrates a simplified approach to learning the extended paddle roll, which is the easiest style roll to learn for beginners. 43 minutes. " I don't see any mention of the back deck roll. Thanks -Jason
Dee Hall
I haven't seen this video, but Jason is referring to a roll that starts on the back deck, not one that finishes there.
Chas
Yes, 95% of the tape is the basic extended paddle roll coming up on the back deck using Greenland and Euro paddles. Jay`s method of teaching yourself is very helpfull and tape is not at all dogmatic. {IMO}
jason
I am looking to lean how to do a back deck roll. A back deck roll is a roll starting on the back deck ending on the front deck. I can already roll up onto my back deck doing a normal sweep roll. -Jason
