  1. Beth and I kicked off the paddle around 2:45 pm, turning a tipsy launch into a skill building moment, running through a T-rescue. The paddle out of the Jones River and north to the Annisquam Light was quite nice. Lots of power boats on the water and anchored at Wingaersheek Beach. Being aware of boat traffic and wake action was key to successful channel crossings. We found a cute patch of sea grass just to the north of the lighthouse where we took a break to stretch and take in the surrounding view. On the return trip, we were into the wind which was starting to build a little as predicted. The current was proving quite strong on the eastern side of the Annisquam River along with the wind. We then made an earlier crossing just north of the Annisquam Yacht Club over to Wingaersheek where the currents were calmer. Lots of anchored boats with all sorts kicking off their weekends. Once we were able to nose into the mouth of the Jones River, it was a relief to be protected and take a more relaxed pace back to the ramp. Total journey was around 4 nm.

That sounds like a lovey paddle.  I will look at the map.

I will know if I am free to join later in the week if that's OK.

Ms Dew- have we paddled together?  I am trying to figure who you are? ?

Certainly fine to check in later. I’m going to see how the weather is shaping up on Wednesday. Going to retitle this thread soon once I can get some details about launch fees and roughly estimate distances.

We have not paddled together yet but may have both been at the Portsmouth kick-off. Look forward to paddling with you soon!

I'm interested in any paddle! ?

Hey there Barbara! Would you be up for a paddle in the Back River down in Weymouth and Hingham? Ends up that Jim will be tied up with other things next Sunday. We could meet at the Weymouth ramp for 9 and enjoy some slack water either side of high tide. There’s also a bunch of islands down that way that could also be fun to paddle around.

  4. Looking to meet up with some paddlers and get out on the water next Sunday. Open to suggestions for location. Have been curious to get down to the South Shore of Boston Harbor or see more in Portsmouth, NH.

  5. Looking to meet at Long Wharf Landing, Gloucester, MA at 2:00 pm for a fun time experiencing nature and building sea kayaking skills. Will head north on the Annisquam River towards Ipswich BayConditions permitting we’ll check out Annisquam Light and beyond. Snack and stretch break after around 1.5 hours of paddle time.

Reenergized we’ll get back on the water to continue exploring and to practice edging, bracing, assisted rescues etc (all optional) as we head back to Long Wharf to wrap up the paddle around 6:00 pm.

    All skills welcome!

Float plan details to be collected via Google Form.

    High tide @ 3:23 PM

If you are looking for casual weekday paddle, I would possibly be interested before and after height of green head season.

I used to put in frequently off pavilion beach with tide coming up, with intention of finishing while tide was still relatively high.

2 hrs on water during weekday is usually what I can do, time-wise.

Hmm, as I understand, start of green head season would be first July full moon? Which if I'm right, that would be July 3.

    Maybe next Thursday or Friday?

  7. Would like to get out in the Ipswich River and Plum Island Sound this summer. Is anyone else interested? My availability is generally going to be on the weekends but sometimes I have some flexibility in my work schedule or time to use for weekdays. Skill level wise I'm a novice that has just learned basic strokes, wet exit, and T rescues. I'm quite familiar with the two areas from a motor boat perspective.

    Practice our rolls again

    :D

I was stressing as I was heading over to Rocky Neck that the parking lot would be packed due to St. Peter's Fiesta and we would need to be creative in getting the trip started. To my delight, there were plenty of spaces and I quickly spotted Beth and Fred. We had a short prelaunch meeting about the best route to take to Greasy Pole and what we might do in addition. Fortunately the boat traffic in the main Inner Harbor channel was dead quiet as we shot across to get a good spot to watch the Friday challengers walk across the pole. I've only ever viewed the event from shore and it was so wild to be right out in the middle of it all. Was glad to see so many first responder boats waiting at ready in case of an injury. After watching about two rounds without anyone succeeding at grabbing the flag from the pole's end, we decided to make our way west and follow the shore along to Good Harbor. We chose to land at Half Moon Beach for a quick break to find that sadly the restrooms at the welcome center close at 5:45 (was around 6:30 or so at this point). Getting back on the water, we started to head a little south of Cressy's Beach and then east to the opposite side of the Outer Harbor channel. We took in some bird watching around Ten Pound Island as we made our way back to Wonson's Cove. Beth suggested a quick skill session and Fred was game for some rolls. I can only hope to gain more confidence in attempting such moves over the course of this season. Thank you Beth and Fred for coming out for a fun time out in Gloucester Harbor!
