Has anyone tried this? I'd try it now if I was within range of the coast. (Click the link to see the right channel to use for your area: 27 for Boston and Portsmouth, 26 for MA north shore.)

I tried this a few times when I first started carrying a radio. It worked less than half the time, probably because I was trying from at or near the launch location, not farther offshore, or, because I had the wrong channel. When it works it just plays back your own voice to you.

I've been thinking I know I carry the radio with DSC but in an emergency might be too stressed to remember proper procedures. I think an organized paddle with the side goal of working on communication procedures would be a great idea.

  2. Hi Paul, we should paddle again soon! I paddled yesterday with air and water in the high 30s  with my glacier gloves on and mittens as a backup. My hands got a little cold at one point but warmed up again after a while. It's often like that for me skiing as well. I don't want to paddle in conditions a whole lot colder than that.

  3. Hi Marshall..

After some thought and reading an archived post started by Cathy, I'm thinking that if it's cold enough that you need pogies and if it's conditional enough that you might get wet, you don't want to have your hands come out of the pogies and be bare and you can't think about anything else. So I think I want a combination of xxl glove that fits into a pogie. Marshal, how roomy are the Kokatats?

  4. Everyone has their preferences but what I like about these is that I can control the scale so I don't have a lot of chart on the deck that I don't need, and the 11 x 17 waterproof fits perfectly on the deck. We;ll see after I've tried them out. Update, I printed three more yesterday and they only charged me $4 and change Maybe I'll take the next batch to Mike's.

  5. Probably a lot of you are already doing this but I wanted to mention a good chart idea I had. I'm taking portions of NOAA .pdf charts, which I believe to be in the public domain, and create 11" x 17" segments of areas most used. I pick up the compass rose from wherever on the chart and drop it in an open area. Then I have Staples laminate a print on both sides of a 11" x 17". The result is a chart of the distance that might be covered in a paddle in a larger scale with a compass rose in a size that fits nicely on a deck for $5.27. If anyone would like me to produce these for them, I will be making more over the next couple of months. Here are the images I've done so far, feel free to use them:

  6. Without pictures this thread is worthless!

You guys make me feel like a slacker/slob:

Room for three kayaks on the basement ceiling:

Gear hangs to dry on the exercise equipment then gets thrown into tubs. Drysuit hangs on the shelving unit where spare equipment gets stored:

And while we're posting pictures here's my cute pup Finn:

  7. Prudence- Normally I'd say let's combine but I'm concerned about traffic on Saturday and would prefer to stay up here if I get some interest.

Paul-  We can tape you up! Kevin Beckwith has expressed interest too but he may decide Gloucester is closer. Gerrish is 10 - 12 NM out of Odiorne, might be a bit much for a winter day. Circumnavigate Newcastle is nice too, that would be mostly in the shadow of any wind...
