  1. For me, challenges with the wing paddle are mainly apparent in conditions and rock play. Bracing is ok but not has solid as with Euros based on the relatively exaggerated convexity of the back side of the paddle. Forget maneuvering strokes such as bow rudder or sliding draw. Rolling can be an issue but not impossible, depending on technique.

Surfskis are becoming more and more popular around the world and those folks probably all start with wings, which is not to say that is the right thing to do. It's certainly not as user-friendly for a beginner. If you use it like a Euro blade, which I have some locals seen do, it loses its advantages.

Wings require a lot more proficiency with the forward stroke. Fatigue, as you pointed out, will result in sloppy technique and the wing loses its power, therefore making it a less ideal paddle for long-distance races, where fatigue is a problem.

As a rescuee, I routinely do this because of the usual weight difference relative to other paddlers. It keeps my boat from flipping over my way as I put full weight on it during heel hook. Specifically, I grab the  perimeter deck line of the side of my boat facing the rescuer and the adjacent rescuer's boat's perimeter deck line. Not everyone can do this from the water, though, because of arm reach. Gordon Brown promotes this in his teaching videos.

  3. Managed to get the set screw in the knob that operates the skeg stuck in the knob (used too much force). Managed to retrieve the screw partially with a screw extractor bit, enough to slide the knob forward and off the steel rod that it sits on (and that holds the skeg wire) so that I can work on the piece without having to work around the attached kayak.

Can't seem to get the set screw out of that plastic knob, though. I tried WD-40. No go. I may have screwed up the threads in the plastic into which the set screw gets screwed. Unless someone can give me good tip how to extract the set screw from the plastic knob, I may have to get a new knob. It's such a cheap little 0.000001 cent part but an important one. Is anyone aware of a place where I can buy this as a spare part, does anyone have an old useable one that they don't need anymore? I'll pay premium dollar :-)

    Thanks

  4. Thanks for details David!

3 layers under your dry suit. That’s what I was thinking, or rather 2-1/2: Wicking layer, then short sleeve Kokatat “thermal” for decreased arm bulk, then the same onesie you use.

Ill try the Maximes at one point, I’ve really liked the Glacier Gloves earlier this year.
