  1. What a great paddle! Thanks Katherine for organizing it so well. I'm really looking forward to the August paddle. Thanks Florrie for checking the distance so I can keep track of the miles. And all that great food and company...what fun!

  2. Hi. There was some discussion about parking and fees at the Solstice paddle. Someone checked and got permission for us all to park there that day for free but the attendant said after that we could put in there but we'd have to pay and I think park across the street. Does anyone else remember that?

  3. Thanks Blaine for trying to get the trip going. I did see the Lane's Cove trip and it looks great but I'm worried about the distance. I comfortably stretched myself last weekend with the 7-8 miles and this trip looks like it's much longer. I can check to see how long Pru is going and perhaps return early with her. I don't want to have to have a tow (if worse comes to worst or visa versa!)!

  4. Thanks for your advice, that is what I needed to hear. I was a little anxious to go out for the first time without having practiced some of the safety skills. I will wait to go out until after I've been to some of the Lake practice sessions (maybe it will clear up today!). I keep telling myself that summer hasn't really started yet so there is time. I do know it is not fair to put other paddlers at risk by my own inexperience, that is also why I thought I'd ask. This sounds like a great trip - have a great time and I'll see everyone on the water after I've practiced some.

  5. I'm not sure if I should come as I recently joined and I have only kayaked on lakes (though I'm very comfortable on a kayak). I recently bought a 14 foot Necky Manitou with a keel and have been out on it twice - once the Shaween, once in a pond. I did go to the new to sea kayaking workshop and I have a skirt, paddle float, etc. I wanted to go to the practice sessions on Walden Pond after work first but the rain has put that off twice so I have not rolled or practiced taking a skirt on and off. Do you think this would be a good first trip? I think I'm supposed to ask your permission to come as the trip leader. What do you recommend? The "easy paddle around a marsh with bird books" made me think it would be a good first trip. I don't know what 6-11 miles on the ocean means as I have no experience with that! Let me know.

    Thanks, Janice

  6. Great Marsh -- this Sunday -- high tide, no greenheads! Perhaps last chance for that combination on a weekend until late August or September.

Launch time -- 9:30 AM (to catch the tide) This will be a CAM trip, but there is a decision to be made in advance, namely between two launch points with different routes:

    • Eagle Hill -- 6-7 mile route, easy L2, no current, limited parking (maybe 5-6 cars) and a bit of poison ivy to dodge.
    • Pavilion Beach -- 10-11 mile route, upper L2, 1.0-1.5 kt tail current at beginning and end -- lots of parking
Both routes are the same in the marsh, with an extra 2-mile leg each way in Plum Island Sound on the longer one. The plan: leisurely paddle through the heart of the marsh, hitting the Parker River as late as possible; lunch on the grass in Rowley (with plumbing); return by the same route or variant, with possible excursion across PI Sound. Bring bird books or cards if interested.

Planned route -- http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=5509465 -- Pavilion Beach is the start point; Eagle Hill Beach is at mile marker #2.

If you are coming and have a preference, please express it. Right now, it does not look like there will be enough to make two pods, but that may change as the day approaches. If we do split, we might join up on the water, or not.

  7. I just posted an L2 paddle in the Great Marsh for Sunday, June 17, B-in-B at 9:30 (to catch the high tide). This is a lovely trip that we've offered quite a few times in past years.

    http://www.nspn.org/forum/index.php?app=calendar&module=calendar&cal_id=1&do=showevent&event_id=814

No rush right now (in March) obviously, but please post here or e-mail me (djlewis at triadic dottie commie) if interested, so we can plan the launch site -- for easy or harder L2 -- and, if well-subscribed, maybe both.

All levels from beginning L2 up are welcome. A few more experienced folks along will make splitting possible.

I would love to come. I've kayaked in fresh water, never in salt water and I went to the workshop for ""new to sea kayaking". This is my first post!
