  1. Excellent summary of an excellent day! Thank you, Pru!

Huge thanks Cathy for all the organizing before the paddle as well as the valiant attempts to keep us together and on some known track once under paddle, and most especially for the ears and candy!

Thanks Beth for the offer to try another boat. I'll take you up on that on another day.

Thanks to all for the good company and happy trip.

  2. After the nav session, I went straight for the compasses. Pru recommended that I get the same compass she has, and had the sales guy take me over. He said he uses, and recommends, the same one: Suunto M-3 Explorer Compass. I'm not sure how it differs from Warren's Leader model, but the one I have is only good in the northern hemisphere. But, as Pru said, when I go to Antarctica, I'll have lots more than just a new compass to gather up.

  3. Rob, Warren, Ed,

I do imagine its possible but it still seems so very unlikely. Doing Rob's drysuit workshop last year and suz's cold water clinic this year were my first two trials -- and I lived. By the time we were doing rescues in November, I was amazed that I wasn't really anywhere near as cold as I'd expected. I'm sure more practice will make cold water paddling seem more enticing, but it is like snowshoeing -- once your out there it's terrific, but sometimes the effort to get going can seem too much. And, as Ed points out, after all that fun, you still have to get the boat to the car and pack up. Oh how I wish that kayaking came with a lodge like skiing ;-)

  4. Sorry, but I don't see anything in the lower right hand corner when looking at the page in Firefox, Safari or Chrome on Mac.

On a different topic: Are you interested in typos in your book. I just started reading it and noticed that Figure 9a should say "Possible locations after 1 hour" rather than "after 1 day. " (My day job: editor)

  5. I think something's wrong. When I click your link, I see two images. I thought those were the files to open/download, but apparently it's really just two images. Double-clicking gets an error and right-clicking gives the "view / save / image" menu.

Update: I use Google Drive, so I noticed an option in the top right to "add to my Drive." From there, I seem to be able to download each file. I'm not sure what happens if one doesn't use Drive.

  6. What a wonderful afternoon!! Some things that hadn't made sense before started to finally sink in, and lots of new stuff to add in as well. Great session!! John, thank you so much for generously sharing your vast knowledge with us. I hope you'll be able to post your slides somewhere. I'm sure I'll need to review them and my notes quite a few times.

And Pru, thanks very much for the compass assistance. You saved me hours of confusion staring at all the options and three or four wrong purchases before getting to the right one.

  7. Sorry I'm just noticing this thread now, but thanks for the acknowledgement!

While I certainly don't mean to lessen Nancy's contribution to this feat, I have to say that I had lots of previous tutoring from Leslie Beale and Bill Voss. It took all three of them to get me there.

And now I'm living in fear of the next pool session. What if I can't do it again?

  8. Thanks! Turns out that Nancy Hill called a bit after my post to offer me a ride. At least this first time there, I can just try to pay attention to where she's going. Next time, I'll be able to get there myself.

Great checklist! I think I have most of it organized and ready to throw into Nancy's car when she gets here.

Ok now back to studying my videos for the hour I have left. :-)

See ya soon & thanks again!!

  9. I'm planning to come this afternoon to the Haverhill session, which will be my first pool session. I just realized I have a few questions: 1) where in Haverhill? Can you provide a street address so I can get directions? 2) Is this the usual "bib" at 1, so I should arrive at 12:30ish?

Any advise on what to wear / bring would also be helpful.

    Thanks!
