  1. Your definition of freedom is starting to look a lot like self indulgence. If you want to "open it up" then go somewhere where you can do so in open water, safely and without disturbing people. Freedom has a context and a set of responsibilities; in a civil society you wouldnt have to legislate for it, it would be called respect for your fellow citizens. I have no problem with jet skier's per se, but its not an activity you can indulge in on a small lake without impacting a lot of people. Also I think there is a huge difference between a passive impact and an active impact ie. the difference between the impact caused simply by being there and say projecting 80+ dba two cycle engine noise. However, I agree that we shouldnt be in the business of protecting people from themselves. Barry.
  2. The difference is that the freedoms enjoyed by kayakers do not impinge on the freedom (freedom from noise, visual and atmospheric pollution) of others ... and even if they had a higher/accident rate I dont know of any case where a kayaker has caused the death of somebody else. Barry.
  3. Can't say I'd have much problem with this part of the legislation.
  4. Interesting ... when I did a lot of sailing I found that if we had a passenger who got seasick, giving them a turn at the wheel often worked wonders. Barry.
  5. Footage from Japan's Coast Gaurd
  6. Apparently they are used to increase the surface area on which sewage-eating microbes can breed. Hopefully a one time event! Barry.
  7. This story probably grinds their gears
  8. Eileen on the WT site has posted some very good logical reasons as to why this bill is incredibly stupid ... 1. The flag will interfere with navigation of the boat, especially in wind. 2. The flag could cause a kayak to capsize. 2. The flag will make it impossible to roll a kayak. 3. The flag may actually trap the capsized kayaker in the kayak. any others ? Barry.
  9. Does anyone know what or who sparked this brilliant piece of legislation ? The post refereces a (d) from Provincetown, but I was wondering if there was an "incident". Previous bills seem to have been initiated in response to a single incident. Barry.
  10. Thanks again John! Great presentation. The link to the Nantucket sound tide/current simulation can be found here. Barry.
  11. More instructors getting themselves into trouble ... Hampshire kayak instructors plucked to safety as darkness falls at sea
  12. Too funny. China works as well. Couldnt find any other countries.
  13. I retract the snarky comment! Having read through the full report there is a lot of good information and food for thought. Barry.
  14. Wow and I thought we over-analyzed events :-)
  15. Thanks Brian, I'll try the extra hardner. Part of the challenge is that I am mixing such small amounts its hard to get the proportions right. Barry.
  16. Hi Phil, Turns out my basement was warm enough to cure the resins, but not the gelcoat! I ended up using a small electric space heater to finally cure the first coat of gelcoat. The remaining coats will wait till spring so no giving me a hard time about my repair job in the meantime :-) Googling gelcoat repair turned up some articles suggesting you need 70 degrees to harden gelcoat. Barry.
  17. While NDK probably wont be offering me a job any time soon the repair is going quite well. I have 3 layers of glass down (pic) and will apply a fourth and hopefully final layer before gelcoat. I have been working in the basement which is warm, although I open the bulkhead doors and windows while working to vent the noxious fumes. A power sander with shop vac minimizes the stray dust. The packing tape idea has worked really well to squeeze out the excess resin and to get a smooth (albeit dimpled) surface. Thanks again for the advice and offers of loaner boats! Barry.
  18. Very glad your friend is okay! What an experience.
  19. Thanks everyone for the great information. It's funny, Doug posted some pictures on facebook of the paddle and the very first picture is of me dragging my boat on it's keel down the beach ... so I guess I get what I deserve! I think this was a long time in the making. Scott, taking your advice I probed for the remaining soft spots and cut out the section between the two holes so the final hole is about 6 inches long. If I can organize suitable backing I'll tape and glass it in from the outside. If I cant I'll take it to the professionals and probably have a keel strip installed. Thanks again for the info. Barry.
  20. Hi Folks, I got back from a paddle in NH yesterday to find about a gallon of water in my stern hatch. At home I discovered a couple of soft spots on the keel and dug out the rotten glass. The result is two holes on the keel back behind the skeg box. I cant even (with my long arms!) reach these spots from the inside. How would you go about repairing this ? I have some experience with repairing a simpler hole. Picture here. Really appreciate your help, thanks, Barry.
  21. It really must have been some storm. I hope they rebuild it and we dont lose access. Barry.
