  1. December? I wouldn't worry too much about trips in December. The freezing temperature of salt water is lower than fresh water; ocean temperatures must reach 28.8 degrees F to freeze. Because oceans are so deep, it takes longer to reach the freezing point. The way the winters are going recently even the lakes are still open in December. But you never know but about the weather, but God help us Mainers if it gets THAT cold this early in the winter.

  2. I have paddled to the ledges beyond Eagle Island in Penobscot Bay from Little Deer Island several times as a day trip.... given the right conditions and following the islands down with the tide makes this the easiest passage to the vinal haven/ north haven archipelago. I haven't extended beyond to NH/VH, but it is on my list and would like to be included in the chatter for planning.

  3. [muscongus bay is a beautiful place to paddle. I have never put in at broad cove, instead opting to head to Friendship... Paddle off in the direction of Gay to Caldwell and down the island chain to Allen. I have paddled in the medomak river and don't recall much in so far as currents, but it may have been the day and the tide.... Anyway i thought if you hadn't seen this write up i would post it....http://www.paddling.net/places/printReport.html?481.lots of lovely islands and ledges. This is a notorious week end for the fall migration for peregrines and the little birds they like to eat. Keep your eyes open.

    Phil,

Your comments are helpful and yes most of the trip is planned to work with the current not against the flow. Since we will be launching from Broad Cove Marine we will ride the current down to our camp site and when we return on Sunday we can ride the current back to Broad Cove. I do, however, have a facination for current flow having worked with it under the bridge at Seabrook and in Lower Hell's Gate. I do see an opportunity to learn more in the Flying Passage and yet I want to be respectful of any risks. I also see an opportunity to work with back eddies which I lack in experience. In studying the shore line of Bremen Long Island, I suspect back eddies may be present!

  4. I'm taking a class on friday and leaving it open for saturday - whether to take a class or not is up in the air...money is tight --- I need a new drysuit and looking around at boats ( and the economy sucks). If anyone is interested in just plain paddling - I might be up for that. I also majorly messed up my work schedule this week end (dumped saturday to a pool nurse!)

Hey Suz - could you bring up a medium womens suit for me to try on????

  5. Oh - a wood paddle you can make or have made specifically to fit you and your boat. A carbon paddle is one size fits all. No doubt, though, the superior greenland stick is a fine paddle. And I just like the feel of wood. Lots of nice builders out there, including Turner. I am curious about these Joe O'blenis paddles.

  6. We just paddled the islands of muscongus bay last week - day tripping - paddled out of friendship out to and around Allen Island and back. Nice sandy beachy spot at some ledges off of Davies island (at low tide). Did not see any other kayakers and lobster boats were very few. We were paddling the day of the lobsterman fracas over on Matinicus and saw life flight go overhead. Very nice paddle. I enjoy that area very much... and we are move often than not paddling the waters north (or east).

  7. Thanks to all for not dismantling the great wall of bangs. I was there the day before the trip with some fellow NSPNers and we were very impressed with the fine construction. I hope it is left to stand!

  8. I had a great time and it was great meeting and paddling with you folks. Great photos - I enjoyed looking at them. You can see what great paddlers Ben and John are in those shots. It was so nice of the sun to show itself for our 2 days!

Hope to paddle with you all again.... when you travel north - keep me in mind...

Again - thanks to Doug for putting this clinic together.

  9. Mary, you are a remarkable person. Have a great time and keep us all updated. And P,B & J ain't so bad as long as the scenery is great, although throw a banana in there for the potassium. Best of wishes ( although you already have them )
