  1. Thanks again David and Lisa for your inputs regarding the GPS alternatives. After reading up on the models that are out there and taking your suggestions into account I think we have decided that for us the 62 series makes most sense at the moment. The model that seems like the best fit is the 62s as it comes with a card slot unlike the base model. The electronic compass is not needed for kayaking but could be a nice bonus while hiking. One more question: Garmin sells the Bluechart g2 on a microSD card for the US for about $160. Is that a good card to get for kayaking in our area when we get back into sea kayaking (Essex bay, Portland ME, Rye NH, Glouchester, etc)?
  2. Ah, that makes more sense. We sold our sea kayak a few years ago but when our kids get older we'll get back to it. Thanks again!
  3. Hi Lisa, Wow! Thanks for that detailed answer!! I never thought of Google Earth. That seems like a great idea. Yes, we have a battery charger like that and we are also hooked on the Eneloop (slow drain) batteries which keeps their charge for months. By the way, your trip log from 2009 is very impressive!! Was that your first year of paddling???! Huh... You even did the Rye to the Isles of Shoals... We have paddled in that area many times (Rye, Kittery etc) but we are far from the level that we could cross over to those beautiful islands. We did paddle from Rye to York harbor once and that was an amazing trip. We also paddled in the Portland, ME, area (to MIKCo) a few times and that area was also amazing. We started paddling in 2002 and kept it up until 2005 when our oldest son was born. We now have two sons and they are old enough now to join us in our boat when we paddle in local lakes and rivers. We have a sit-on-top Tequila triple kayak (they share a seat) so it works out great. Thanks again for your suggestions!! /Lynn and Mikael
  4. Hi, We are looking to buy a waterproof handheld GPS unit to bring on kayaking trips for logging purposes mainly. There are so many options which is why we are posting it here. What we are looking for is a unit with good battery time (color screen not needed) and the possibility to generate images on the computer with a map overlay that shows our trips. I don't know if the GPS units come with software for this or if that is software you buy separately. What GPS units/softwares are you using for these purposes? Any input in this matter is welcome! PS We used to paddle (and post on these boards) many eons ago and we just recently started paddling again. It feels great!
  5. I just heard about this sad sad story today. Our thoughts go to the family. RIP
  6. Walter, thanks again for the SNG last weekend and your trip report! We just added another photo album with more pictures from the SNG. Here is the link: http://mysite.verizon.net/amaruk/Album10.htm Have fun! /Mikael and Lynn
  7. >Lynn and Mikael, > >thanks for letting us use you Amaruk, now it's up to the >both of you to try! >Great pictures, Thanks! > >Werner Thanks for the show!! It was so cool to see you perform this stunt! Lynn and I rolling it???? :-)That is so way beyond our skills. But at least we know that it is possible now.
  8. Thanks Walter for a great paddle! Here are some pictures of when our tandem was rolled. Enjoy! http://mysite.verizon.net/amaruk/Album9.htm
  9. Deb, We also have the Pentax Optio 43WR and we have nothing but good things to say about it! Here is a link to a new trip report we just put together. All pictures were shot with our Optio 43WR. http://mysite.verizon.net/amaruk/Album3.htm Have fun! Lynn and Mikael
  10. Here are the directions: I-95 North to exit 5, Portsmouth Traffic Circle. Go 1/4 around the circle to Route 1 By-Pass south to Route 1 south. Take a left onto 1A south at the traffic lights at Elwyn Road. Follow Route 1A south for several miles and Odiorne State Park will be on the left. At the traffic lights at Elwyn Road there is a Market Basket on the right opposite corner and a Mobile or Exxon on the left opposite corner. There is a wooden bridge just before the Park and there is free parking there. If you have any questions, cell 978-376-0778 Mikael and Lynn Necky Amaruk
  11. This Saturday we plan on going to Odiorne State Park to put in for a paddle around New Castle Island. It is a level 3 paddle, there are strong currents and confused waves in the Piscataqua River in some areas. We plan on having lunch at Four Tree Island across from Strawberry Banke in Portsmouth. The trip will be approximately 13 miles and plan on a put in at 9:30am and return around 2:30. We have done this paddle a few times and it is a nice paddle with lighthouses and forts for scenery. The put-in is located on Route 1A at the foot of the wooden bridge (free parking available). If anyone needs a more detailed description to the put-in, just let us know and we'll post more details. 12. The laxative effect pointed out by Bob could be a problem when paddling. "Consumption of 30 to 50 grams of sorbitol or xylitol, or 20 grams of mannitol, causes diarrhea in most people." After just two bars you might be in a hurry to get that drysuit off... :-( Source: http://www.lowcarbluxury.com/sugaralcohols.html Mikael and Lynn Necky Amaruk
  13. Good Point! Does anyone know what was purchased last time and for how much? Mikael and Lynn Necky Amaruk
  14. A group purchase of radios sounds like a great idea! Anyone else interested? Mikael and Lynn Necky Amaruk
