  1. I'll join you at 8 AM but need to be off the water by noon because I am going to "The 39 Steps" at Gloucester Stage at 2:00 PM. Perhaps we can have a group that turns back sooner, if others want a shorter paddle also. And, if anyone wants to join me for the very funny play, you can shower at my place, .9 mile from Lanes Cove.

  2. The rest of us were glad when "he rolled up immediately and gamely made his way out through the remainder of the set back into more open water" so we did not have to go in for a rescue.:-))

My thanks to my surf landing and launch team. I have not done that in years. Muscle memory does kick in.

Fabulous day on the water. I love big swells!

  3. Gotta pay attention to the boomers. Saturday Joe, Dan, Bob and I gave it wide berth. The swells were large and the sets were very uneven. This happened Sunday afternoon:

ROCKPORT — One person has died after a boat he was in overturned and sent two people into the water off Rockport Sunday afternoon, officials said.

Coast Guard rescue crews, a Coast Guard helicopter, and the Rockport harbormaster went to the area where the 20-foot boat overturned, near Straitsmouth Island, shortly after 1:20 p.m., according to a press release issued by the Coast Guard.

A wave had actually washed the boat onto the island, said co-Harbormaster Rosemary Lesch, who went to the scene along with co-Harbormaster Scott Story.

One person was pulled from the water by the harbormaster’s boat crew and was initially reported to be in serious condition.

The person, described as a man in his 50s, was subsequently pronounced dead, the harbormasters office said. The person's name was not immediately released.

Two Coast Guard crew members from Station Gloucester went aboard the harbormaster boat and rendered aid to the person recovered from the water.

The second person was able to get to the island’s shore and was later rescued by the Coast Guard helicopter crew, the Coast Guard said.

The response included a 47-foot Coast Guard boat from Station Gloucester and a MH60 Jayhawk from Air Station Cape Cod, the Coast Guard said in a Twitter post.

  4. I actually knew nothing about this history, but a "naval" battle fought on Aug. 8, 1775 is going to be reenacted this Saturday morning in Gloucester's outer harbor. Check out this link to an article about it.

Anyone interested in watching it from kayaks?  Probably need to launch around 8:30 AM from the greasy pole boat ramp.
