  1. Hi Folks -

Please check out the calendar for details on the classes with Nigel Foster on Nov 4th and 5th. There will be a long boat beginner surf class on the 4th and an advanced class on the 5th. Don't miss this opportunity to train and paddle with one of the most well known coaches in sea kayaking!

  2. I second the Reeds. I have a dry cag and it does well in keeping out the water - better than an IR top I have w/ neoprene neck. I have a thin neck and the Reeds fits quite snug. (Doesn't stretch as much as latex, so getting out of it is always good for some laughs). It doesn't breathe, but great at keeping wind out, so wicking layers are a good thing.

  3. Hi Folks,

We have the opportunity to have Nigel Foster back again this fall in early Nov. He's traveling overseas prior to the SKG symposium in late Oct, so begining of Nov was the earliest weekend he could accomodate us.

Last year we did a beginner surf class 1st day and an advanced surf class 2nd day - tho I believe due to lack of conditions the 2nd day became more a boat handling class. My questions for the membership are: What mix of classes would you like to see? For example, we could again do a beginner long boat & advanced long boat surf class, or a short boat and long boat surf class, or a surf class and another type of class, like boat handling.

For anyone not familiar with Nigel, please check out this link:

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

  4. Hi Kevin -

Believe the address for Frisbee's is 88 Pepperrell Rd, Kittery Point, ME. It's right in Pepperrell Cove. There's a sea-food resturant right there too. Capt'n Simeons (spelling probably off). Depending on size of group, you may not be able to all park there, but believe there's parking across street at a school parking lot. There's also a put in further up the river in the back channel, behind some school/academy. It's escaping me how to get there but if you want a longer paddle, that's an option. There's also Ordiorne Point on the NH side.

    Have fun!

  5. There are some spots still left in the morning session. This is a great opportunity to gain exposure to traditional kayaking skills in a fun and individually focused class. Cheri and Turner are renown for their coaching ability and Greenland skills and have taught at many symposiums across the country and even in New Zealand! Don't let this opportunity pass. Please contact me (contact info in calendar posting) if you are interested.

  6. Have you been wanting to try a traditional skin on frame boat? Or paddle with a Greenland stick? How about doing a balance brace or even hand rolling?

In August, NSPN is offering to it's members a Greenland skills class taught by Cheri Perry and Turner Wilson. Please check out the calendar for more information!

  9. NPSN is pleased to sponsor a Boating Adventures/Misadventures class with Bob Foote on June 17th.

Water is dynamic. In a blink of an eye, it can change from being a placid, inviting, and relaxing

environment to one that is unfamiliar, unpredictable, and threatening. Bob Foote knows this first hand. For over twenty-five years he has been leading canoe and kayak trips to some of the more remote and not-so-remote regions of South America, Central America and North America. He’s had to deal with everything from minor injuries and capsize recoveries to flash floods and large waves breaking apart his boat.

In this class Bob will go over some of these real life paddling-related scenarios. Student’s will work together to come up with strategies and techniques to avoid or handle such situations. Through drills and role-playing, students will also spend time on the water developing the necessary rescue skills and awareness that is needed when out kayaking (whether it be on a lake, river, or on the ocean). This class will be a mixture of dry-land and on-water (some lecture, but mostly on water scenarios and drills).

More information will be posted to the NPSN calendar soon, so please check back.

This 2 day course will focus on developing and refining strokes/skills and is geared towards women who are fairly new to kayaking and those in need of some refinement and additional skill development. More information will be posted to the NPSN calendar soon, so please check back.

  11. Date: Thursday March 30th

    Time: 6:30-9:00pm

    Location: Gould Barn, Topsfield MA

If you love the great outdoors – this workshop is for you. Share a fun, informative, and social evening with fellow paddlers. This workshop will cover trip planning; camping equipment (gotta love gear!!), the 3 F’s, cooking (good food really adds to the camping experience) , site selection/set up/ethics, boat packing and a few other things. If you’ve never done kayak camping before, this is a great way to learn the basics. If you have done kayak camping, bring your favorite piece of gear, i.e. what you wouldn’t dream of camping without, to shared with the group. And feel free to bring a ‘brown-bag’ with dinner. No RSVP necessary. See you there!

    Directions:

From the south, take Rt. 1 north exit off of Route I-95. Follow that to Rt. 97 west into Topsfield. At the stop sign, the library will be on your left and a small side street immediately before the stop sign is on your right - that is East Common Street. Take a right onto this street and park in the lot on the right that is for the Emerson Center/Congregational Church.

From the north, take I-95 south to the Topsfield Rt. 97 exit. Proceed to Congregational Church on the right and Town Common on the left. Make a left turn onto Route 97 East, for 1/2 a second and then take a SHARP left onto East Common St and park in the lot on the right that is for the Emerson Center/Congregational Church.

  12. Hi Jason -

In March there will be a kayak camping workshop. One of the topics was kayak packing. If you cover it during the Feb workshop, that's cool. For the March workshop, we can either just lightly touch on the subject or go into more detail - whatever the group wants. But if you don't cover it in Feb, we'll definitely cover in detail in March. Just a thought...

    Cheers,

  13. NSPN is pleased to have Nigel Foster back to teach two surf classes. A basic long boat class on 10/15, and an advanced long boat class on 10/16. Learn about safety, wave patterns, controlling your boat and many other important skills for the surf zone. Due to the popularity of Nigel's classes and to give all NSPN members an equal chance at getting a spot, a lottery system will be used to determine the participants. Here's how it will work:

1). Open registration: Send your name, e-mail address, day & eve phone numbers, ACA #, boat description and emergency contact name/phone number, and which class or classes you want to participate in to Bill Gwynn at mac@masscoast.com. Make sure you include all the information required.

2). Open registration will be from 10/5-10/7 midnight. Any registrations received after midnight on 10/7 will not be accepted.

3). On 10/8, names will be drawn and the folks will be notified. Due to the short time frame, please be prepared to send a check in ASAP after being notified.

    Other information:

Basic Class: This class is geared towards those comfortable with wet exits and being in small-moderate surf. Participants signing up should have knowledge of basic strokes.

Advance Class: Participants should be comfortable in larger surf conditions, have reliable roll, and good stroke skills.

Location of Classes: TBD depending on the conditions. One to two days prior to the class, a decision will be made on the location and participants will be notified. Keep in mind that the classes could be held anyplace from the south shore to NH.

Class Size: Limited to 6 participants each day.

Proper Dress is Required: The water is getting cold and due to the nature of class, participants without bomb proof rolls may be spending some time in the water. Wet suits with a dry top or full dry suit is strongly recommended. Helmets are required.

Cost: $145 for NSPN members. The class is restricted to NSPN members.

Cancellation Policy: All NSPN-sponsored commercial events are run on a “pass-through-the-cost-basis.” NSPN may include a very small markup over actual costs to cover incidental expenses and support club activities that benefit the membership as a whole. The club does not subsidize activities that benefit only the participants in classes with limited enrollment. Therefore, in the highly unlikely event that the class is canceled due to extreme weather, there will be no refunds.
