JohnHuth
I don't know if anyone is interested in freshwater trips - possibly Spider (and me). There's a riveting story told in an old book, called The Lure of the Labrador Wild by Dillon Wallace. It describes an ill-fated trip into Labrador. If you are mildly interested, I posted a map here:http://artofwayfinding.blogspot.com/2013/09/map-of-hubbard-wallace-elson-1903-trip.htmlThere's some text that describes the journey. If you're into this kind of expedition writing, it's definitely worth the read.
kate
Tragically fascinating. One misstep at the beginning and the rest of the tragedy followed inexorably.
spider
Yes quite the story...here's a different map link that also helps to get an idea of where it is located http://www.satelliteview.co/?lid=6159954_CA_HSTM_05&place=Susan-River-CanadaIf ever there was a lesson on how important local knowledge this is is a story for all time....I haven't been that far north as yet. I had the great pleasure of paddling for 10 days with a couple of retired fish and game guys from the Chicoutimi and east region.. we spent much time looking at Caribou tracks and moose tracKs...wolf tracks etc but not the animals themselves just traces .... One thing thinking you could live off the land...another thing to be able to do it... or not... I am sure..For a salt water version of not paying attention to local info along coastal Labrador around that same time line (I think) is a book named " Northern Lights" by Desmond Holdridge. prudenceb
There is a more recent - and truly thrilling - book written about this adventure. Not only does it tell the story of the failed Hubbard expedition, but of his wife's return some years later to find out what happened. Fabulous fabulous book! - Great Heart the Story of a Labrador Adventure. You can buy it on amazon:http://www.amazon.com/Great-Heart-Labrador-Adventure-Kodansha/dp/1568361688pru
JohnHuth
I'll second what Pru says, Great Heart is an excellent read. It mixes fact and creates a semi-fictional account of the original expedition, and the subsequent expeditions by Dillon Wallace and Mina Hubbard (Hubbard's widow) who both completed the trip Hubbard originally proposed. It also has a number of photos from all three expeditions, and good maps.
