Gcosloy
It was supposed to be another warm day but couldn't get above the 40's on the water. No sun, overcast but no fog. Sid and I left the Kittery Wharf and paddled down Piscataqua harbor looking for rocks along the southern shore line. Passing Fort Constitution we had fun in the tidal race that seems to occur during lower tides. Rounding Jaffrey Point I was surprised at how moderate the water was, yes rollers and breakers because of all the reefs and shallowness but much less than I've seen previously. Heading South along the Rye coast line there was some good rock play and a bit of surfing. Arriving at Wallis Sands I thought we'd have some premier surf but only caught one roller and then approaching 15' from the beach was hit hard by one then another dumper which necessitated bongo sliding twice to say upright. Sid reported the same. Wallis Sands is a good place to practice bracing and sliding. Its relatively safe until you approach the beach and when they break they grab and broach your stern so fast you have to be quick or window shades descend. Sid and I had the SE wind for the ride back and kept off the rocks to make faster time as the sun was lowering in the sky. The trip was a perfect balance of calm seas and excitement close in to shore and it all depended on where you paddled. Wonderful area! Dry suit, cag donned for lunch of hot soup on the beach, waterproof gloves, and great company, priceless.
