Not that this is completely aligned, but there was a period called the "Medieval Warming Period," where ocean temperatures in the North Atlantic were supposedly about 1 degree C higher than they are today. This is correlated with the Viking exploration of North America. It's a bit of a controversial subject, however, as people try to use this to refute climate change.
