Kayak Camping Workshop! Thursday June 21

Event Date: June 21 6:30 (Single Day Event)

This workshop will cover the basics of kayak camping: trip planning and selection, gear to bring (ranging from essential to recommended to optional), loading your boat, cooking equipment and camping recipes.

This years workshop will be special as it will include a slide show travelogue by Kate Hartland, featuring some favorite campsites and locations. Kates photos and trip reports have been an NSPN favorite over the past few years.

We will have a loaded boat to demonstrate packing and unpacking, we'll talk about camp kitchen and recipes, and maybe even cook up a morsel or two.

This will be an especially worthwhile evening for those planning to do some kayak camping for the first time.

It will also be great for people with camping experience, even hard core veterans, as part of the fun is is when people share their personal ideas, recipes, anecdotes etc.

One of the fun things about this workshop is Show & Tell. If you have a favorite piece of camping gear or a personal secret or recipe, bring it along!

Thanks, Peter, for taking on the near-impossible task of organizing this workshop (not to mention bringing your boat and all the camping gear to go in it). I definitely learned from it, and I really enjoyed meeting the other folks. We were having such a good time that REI finally had to kick us out so they could close.

Warren, awesome recipes!

hey! , how about my awesome recipe? (Oh thats right , I didn't share it with anyone.)

Petie's breakfast cereal:

(you dial in the proportions)

1 cup rolled oats

a small handful of pumpkin seeds (pepitas)

a small handful sliced almonds

1/2 that much flax seeds

a small handful of shredded coconut

add raisins, cranberries or dried fruit to taste.

add some boiling water (or hot milk) and maple syrup or brown sugar to taste

(I tried this recipe with wheat germ but it then had a wheat germ-y taste.)

Thanks, Kate for your wonderful slide show and to everyone who was there. It was fun and I learned from it too.

We really liked your eggplant spread - any recipe for that?

Thank you very much to Kate and Peter - we learned a lot as well!

eggplant spread:

cook a small eggplant for 40 minutes or less:

scoop it out of skin, mash it up (its already pretty mashd and gooey then.

add minced/chopped garlic, some tomato base (pureed, crushed/ diced tomatoes ) a tiny bit of olive oil. etc. spices like salt, pepper,

dice or puree or otherwise mash up a small bell pepper, too, if you like.

Peter and Kate,

Thank you for planning a great camping workshop and to all those in attendance for sharing your experiences. I had several "Aha" moments when I realized, "Oh, that is how you do it."

Peter, thank you for the awesome recipes!

Now back to planning my next great adventure.....

Peter and Kate,

I don't know if you noticed me scribbling furiously to get everything down, but I have many pages of great ideas I can't wait to try out.

Many thanks for the very informative, and entertaining, workshop.
