paulariegel
Looking to expand the fleet the spring and add a boat that can be used for ww and surfing. Any suggestions for a small (125/5'5")paddler? Thanks!

markstephens
Paula: You're about Sing's size, so I bet he would have some good recommendations for you. For surfing ideally you want a flat bottom without a lot of rocker, and hard rails at the stern. A couple ideas for you would be the Riot Trickster or the Pyranha Inazone 212: http://playak.com/kayaks.php?id2=92&id=136 Another idea: The Savage Maniac. One just sold on eBay for $150, just two hours from Boston: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...me=STRK:MEWA:IT

paulariegel
And that's from the person who's after a Romany LV??? Something about a pot, kettle and a certain color come to mind ;-))
sings_evil_twin
buy used for the first one since it's going to be trade-offs between surfing and white water. And, within whitewater, whether you want river runner vs a playboat. You can borrow my Trickster if you want just to get the feel. It's an older style playboat that is more like a river runner for small paddlers because of it's longer length (by today's standard) and relatively higher volume. It has fins that can be put on for surf and it surfs better than most ww boats. This boat will stern squirt on you if you're not careful on your peel outs from an eddy. However, if you not careful with your edges/lean on any eddy/current line, you'll flip anyway regardless of boat volume. That will be part of your learning curve with paddling on moving water.Anyway, you can use the boat a bit and you'll have a basis and some more thoughts about what you may actually want in a future boat (or boats).sing
paulariegel
Thanks Sing. I got into the AMC WW course the weekend after next - if you're there maybe I could try it out. Cheers!
sings_evil_twin
Paula,Glad you got in. I'll be there for there weekend days, though I have a wedding reception to get back for on Saturday nite. Were you planning to bring equipment or borrow AMC's. The AMC tendency is to put folks in old (displacement hull) river runners. This is fine for the course but when folks buy a more modern (planing hull) boat, they end up having to learning to deal with sharper chines/edges. If you aren't bringing a boat, I strongly suggest you just use the Trickster for the weekend. It be pretty forgiving for you since you're 15 lbs lighter than me. The Trickster's volume is 48 gallons. For someone your size, a true playboat would be probably be in the 42-44 gallon range, so that you can really throw it around. Thus, the Trickster will act more like a river runner for you. In comparison, I went to the AMC school with a 41 gallon Perception Shock. I was throwing inadvertent bow and stern enders every which way. Great if one is an experienced playboater. Not so good for someone just learning (unless someone wants combat roll practice over and over again).Saturday will be mostly be learning on flat moving water to practice going straight (harder in ww boat), edge awareness, ferrying and eddy peel in/out. Sunday will be the day to run a class II where you deal with faster water, rapids, small holes and waves and apply what you practiced the previous day.I have an extra skirt for the Trickster. If you have a small size keyhole skirt (30"x16") for a sea kayak that will work too. Will also bring an extra 185 cm WW paddle (small shaft). Getting used to a shorter paddle is another thing. sing
Bob C
Hi Paula,I use an Inazone 230 and Deb uses an Inazone 225 for surfing -- those are the ones you've seen us in in pool sessions and so far I haven't killed myself in small (3-5') surf. My gurus on WW/surf boats would be Chris Thomas at NESC (helmet-cam videos *inside* the curl...) and Ken Cooper.Cheers,Bob
sings_evil_twin
Chris, Man, you out there!? Didn't realize you were taking disciples. Let me in, Dude!!!! sing(Alas... "guru-less...") What a place, NSPN.
SeanK
Paula-I agree with Sing, buying a used boat is your best bet. I'm 5'6" and I bought a used Necky Gliss, which turns out to be a great all around boat. Surfs well and handles well in ww. The Necky Jive is also a great all around boat for both situations -- you'll also probably see more Jive's out there on the used market too vs. the Gliss.-Sean
paulariegel
Hi Sing - I was going to borrow boat/skirt. Have a 210 shaft paddle that I was going to bring. But perhaps a shorter paddle would be better. Sure, I'll give the Trickster a try. I can always use work on combat rolls too :-)))

sings_evil_twin
BTW, here are some pics of the Trickster in small surf, courtesy of the those crazy and wild Gwynn Bros. http://www.kayakpics.com/gallery/isabel You're welcomed to use the Trickster for awhile to do more white water and to try some surfing with it. (If anyone is wondering, no, my Trickster is not for sale as it is my "guest boat" for folks wanting to try white water or surf). As you can see, I ride pretty high in it. Means it'll be a good river runner for you (but a lousy "playboat" for the higher volume that helps make it a good river runner). sing PS. If any one, medium/large size, is looking for WW/Surf (compromise) boat, there is a Prankster on sale for $200 on the NPMB site. The Prankster is a higher volume version of the Trickster. If you want my limited insight about the plus and minus of this boat for white water and/or surf, email me.

Sing would this boat fit me or do you have another recommendation for a WW/Surf boat that might fit me? I was looking at a Pyranha H3 255 but I don't know how it would do in the surf and out of the box I have issues with the guides that connect the back rest adjusters from front of the combing to the back rest, they cut into my legs. Thanks -Jason
sings_evil_twin
Jason,No. You'll submarine the Prankster. Email me, or post on the other board, if you want.sing
JimH
You need to try out the new Pyranha Seven O - in the small/med size. It will be in the states early may. We've had the larger version for some time - with great reveiws for the surf....superfast, carves extremely well, and forgiving.you are looking at $1095 retail.for more budget minded - you might look at last year's I3 221 or Inazone 221 from Pyranha. Around $700 new.
