Boston Harbor Suggestions

Recommended Posts

I'm planning to head out for an overnight in Boston Harbor next week with a friend. It's meant to be a shakedown for an upcoming trip in Maine. Get some time on the water, sort out camping and equipment details, etc. Does anybody have any suggestions for a put-in that would be okay during the week? Also, any suggestions as to what islands to camp on and visit are much appreciated. Mileage will be kept quite short, probably somewhere around 4-6 miles a day.

I have never done more than day trips on Boston Harbor so I couldn't tell you about overnight parking. Durring the day city point works well. You might talk with the Boston parking people.

As for camping you need to have a reservation. I know of one person that attempted to camp on long island and was escorted off the island by the police. If you do camp on an non official island pick one that doesn't have a bridge to the main land.

Thanks, that's very helpful. Looks like they're all booked up for next week. Any ideas on a short overnight trip that's doesn't require too much driving?

The closest thing might be Thacher Island. I have no idea what might happen if you parked at Lane's Cove but others have done Thacher and could suggest put-ins for overnight parking.

See my post about the put in and parking in Rockport for the paddle to Thacher. It's surprisingly easy! You need to make a reservation with the Thacher Island Association and it is (or was) only $5 a night.

Looks perfect. Thanks for all of the information and suggestions. So long as the campsite is open it looks like we'll be going to Thatcher.

Within about 12 hours of originally posting, I've got a trip planned out thanks to you guys. This place is great!

Camping reservations have been made. So long as the weather cooperates, everything looks good to go.

It looks like there are a number of beaches along the way to the island. Does anybody know if any of them are kayak friendly? Just thinking about snack breaks and other places to explore.
