?? guess I'm not up on what all the acronyms stand for...

from memory and some of this may have changed with revamp of ACA....

ACA = American Canoe Association - it's one of the national organizations (the other being BCUNA - the British Canoe Union North America) that provides education and instruction related to paddling / conservation / recreation in the US.

IDW = Instructor Developmental Workshop - teaching you how to instruct paddling within the norms/parameters of the ACA

ICE = Instructor Certification Exam - certifying that you can teach within the norms/parameters established by the ACA

If you pass you're ICE, you can be certified as open water or advanced open water coach - the difference being the distance offshore and conditions under which you're allowed to run a course.

after awhile, you may want to pursue it and become an IT = Instructor Trainer - the person running the ICE/IDW

and that all holds true within specific aspects of paddling....canoeing, ww, sup, sea kayaking. so while you may be a coach on the sea, you aren't qualified to run any courses on a river unless you've taken that class, exhibited those skills and passed that cert.

...or something like all that anyways.

Rick has it right 'cept on a detail. An ACA "coastal' sea kayak instructor can teach up to level 3 students in mild to moderate conditions. IIRC that's less than 15k wind, seas to 2 feet, currents to 2 knots and breaking waves to 2 feet. There's more details about the expectations here:
