Video-ing

Question for anyone - I'm interested in getting some footage with a deck mounted camera - e.g. me rolling or something.

I searched back in the threads, but couldn't find anything.

Is there a rig of some kind that one can put on a standard kayak to video oneself?

Presumably one needs also a waterproof camera of some kind.

If someone has a rig like this, I'd love to borrow it, can pay for your troubles.

Many thanks!

Hi John-

Yes, you need a waterproof camera to start. 10' will do unless you want to video posseidon's needle rescues from the far end. They run ~100-300$ these days. Then you'll need something to attach the camera to the boat, paddle, helmet or other frame of reference. If all you want is video of you rolling, best bet is an assistant holding the camera. Other options include sticky pods (small vacuum mounts), or those multi-bendable small tripods which can be wrapped around the deck lines. Don't forget a tether line to keep the expensive parts with the boat when things go wrong. Lastly you'll need some software and a computer to take the video and do something useful with it.

If this is a one-off, I've got something that might work depending on what you aim to do.

Hey John, Try these sights:

or:

http://www.stickypod.com

I like the chase cam mounts the best for light equipment. Have used it on my kayak as well as in an auto racing venue. Compact, high quality and reasonably priced.

The sticky pod mounts are much stronger but kind of large.

Hope this helps.

Hi John,

Here's a picture of one Sticky Pod set-up. I can move it about. (always a tether). Using extension rods of different lengths and available knuckles, you can position camera any way you want. (The camera is the GoPro Hero)

There is another system that looks pretty good but you need to have a mounting fixture on your deck and you would need one everywhere you want to mount this; a good solution for someone that wants to mount in the same place all the time.

Best of luck, Jon

I dont have a pic of my rig, but some folks saw it last weekend. I'll try and mount it up and take a pic tonight. You can get a vaccum suction mount and as much extension tubing as you need to create a mount here if you want to DIY. I think my total cost was ~50 bucks.
