rick stoehrer
with the swell forecast hovering between "meaty" and "go to pub" we drove down to CT and were not disappointed. launched from stonington and headed out to napatree...on the paddle over we could clearly see the waves and their foamy tops from miles away....hmmmn.... got to napatree and indeed could only really play BEHIND the initial break at the molars....had any of us been caught in any of the monsters breaking there it would have been very, very bad. we used the area right behind the point where they were forming up again into nice 3 footers rolling off into the distance and caught rides til we tired....nothing exciting on this side but safe. with the ebb building after lunch we thought it would be silly to NOT go and take a look at catumb rock and the reefs....so we headed off towards the green can to fall back with the ebb into sugar reef....on that paddle out we could clearly see mountains on fishers...oh, wait, those mountains have snow on top and are moving!! holy crap, those are waves! getting to the can between catumb (which was clearly breaking in a very big, destructive, holy crap i don't want to be there way) and sugar reef (we'll get to that part in a minute) we came across some other paddling carpet baggers from the N in the eddy behind the can....said our hello's, did a few drops and surfs to the front and drifted down to sugar reef on the bump and swell. and as the ebb maxed we had beautiful 5 and 6 footers to surf...it was glorious! paddle, drop in...FFFLLLYY....it was really something. the storm swell wasn't breaking here...just rolling under us and so you'd be surfing these faces and up, up, up you'd go.....and down, down, down....there were some true monsters rolling through here....at one point there was a fella that was about ABOVE the level of the spar sticking outta sugar....they were phenomenal conditions. slogged back after max ebb a bit and played on "big day" reef....so named by locals because of when it goes off....and it surely does. been skunked on that drive to CT before...this made 'em alllll worth it in spades....simply the best, biggest water to play in i've ever had in the US....a great day with some fine paddlers. From my understanding it was rainy with lightning in MA. CT was the place to be with sunny weather and some moving water. -Jason
