JohnHuth
Hi, all - I'm conducting a seminar called "primitive navigation" and could use a bit of help. There are various "rules of thumb" that help estimate distance based on what you can see. Here are some of them: 50 meters Mouth and eyes of a person can clearly be distinguished 100 meters Eye appear as dots 200 meters General details of clothing can be distinguished 300 meters Faces can be seen 500 meters Colors of clothing can be distinguished 800 (0.5 miles) meters A person looks like a post 1 mile (1.6 km) Trunks of large trees can be seen 2.5 miles Chimneys and windows can be distinguished 6 miles- Large houses and towers can be recognized 9 miles A church steeple can be seen If any of you have photos online or you could mail them to me that illustrate these, I'd appreciate it. Even if you have some off-shore photos of land from a distance that you could point me to, I could pick and choose some. Thanks!!
