Cape Cod Kayaking

Paddling around the Monomoy Islands is always pleasant. There are extensive clam flats there, and a twisty/windy route between North Monomoy and South Monomoy. S. Monomoy is now attached to the mainland through a "land-bridge" that developed between the island and South Nauset Beach.

The best launching point is on a causeway, just south of the Chatham Coast Guard station - on the way to Morris Island. Another good launch spot is Harding beach, on the other side of Chatham.

Surf - on the other side of the Coast Guard station, there's can be some decent surf on the beach facing the ocean side.

There are a lot of seals around the Monomoys, so you may get lucky. Also- the area is a protected bird refuge.

If you manage to get all the way to the end of South Monomoy (recommended only for the more experienced), you'll feel very distant from the rest of the world- kinda cool, really. The currents can be pretty strong off the S. tip of Monomoy, however, so know your stuff if you venture there, or else just avoid it.
