Guest guest Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 I was paddling today in upper Mystic Lake and noticed 4 new buoys in the lake belonging to MIT. There was also a small boat with strange equipment and computers slowing patrolling the lake. I paddled up and asked what kind of data they were gathering. The reply was they were gathering soundings from the bottom as part of a test using remote submersibles. A group from MIT is testing a remote submersibles with a new kind of side scanning sonar. The submersibles will be used later this summer for an archeological expedition off Greece to explore some sunken ships. The four buoys in Mystic Lake are GPS transceivers that allow the scientist to monitor the exact position of the submersible in the lake while it is below the surface. The researchers have made an interesting find at the bottom of the lake. They have scanned images of what appears to be a firetruck on the bottom of the lake. They will be doing more testing tommorrow afternoon (May 7) and probably some next week also. Quote
