glil
No paddling happened, but an appropriate event for paddlers and anyone else who enjoys the ocean and beaches. The Ocean Conservancy sponsored this 18th annual worldwide beach and waterway clean-up. Most of the Mass coastline gets spruced up by groups of volunteers during the month of September. The clean-up at Parker River NWR on Plum Island was this weekend. We had a great turn-out. Many more people than in past years it seemed. To give an example of just how much trash collects on the beaches, my group covered less than one half of a mile and filled 20 trashbags-primarily plastic bottles, bottle lids, rope sections, bait bags, food wrappers, tangeled fishing line, chunks of styrofoam from buoys and various other things that don't belong. This was in addition to the piles of damaged lobster pots, planks full of nails, ropes, nets, etc. We left when we ran out of bags and time with sections of the beach not finished. This is really great event that makes a huge difference in the environment we all enjoy. It happens every September all along the coast. It's something to check out for anyone who's interested next year.
Kevin B (RPS Coach)
Gay, So glad this worked out. Perhaps next year with some planning we can offer club support to the effort.
