Wayne Smith
Planning on circumnavigating Jamestown, RI. Launch promptly at 10:00 Am to catch the tides. 20 mile paddle, one hazard area early (Beavertail Pt). 2 planned stops, and normal cruising pace. Paddle is advanced level based on distance, but intermediates with the stamina to do 20 miles at a regular pace are welcome. Rain, small craft advisories, or waves 5 feet or larger at the entrance to Narragansett Bay cancel. Current forecast is NW winds 5-10 and waves 2 feet or less. Check the forecast before you leave home. Bring plenty of water, spare paddle, towline, and VHF if you have them. Cancellation, if needed, will be posted on the ConnYak BBS. EEL
> and normal >cruising pace. > What constitutes a "normal cruising pace" and what would be the expected average speed on the water for the entire trip? Ed Lawson
Wayne Smith
I define it as the pace most club paddles set -- about 3.5 knots. We'll actually go faster than that because of the currents. The idea is to not burn yourself out early. Someone new almost always hits the wall about the 15th mile or so on this paddle, especially if there's an onshore breeze in the afternoon. We were done by 4:30 when we did the paddle in July.
