Posted July 8, 200718 yr Anyone using either the Casio G'Zone Type-S or Type-V phones from Verizon? They clain MIL–SPECS Certified to MIL–Standard 810F for shock and dust and waterproof at 1m for 30 min - also tested for salt deterioration. I'm due for a replacement and wonder if these guys are as good as they seem?
July 9, 200718 yr It depends on whether you can deal with a bulky, heavy (and expensive) cell phone for the 99% of the time when you're not on the water. I'm also not sure of the advantage of a waterproof cell phone if you carry a VHF radio. It's certainly NOT a good substitute.
July 10, 200718 yr We use Kyocera palm phones that are definitely not bulky as phones. We put them in bags. The typical cell phone needs to be open to be used so this sort of phone, say a Treo, works in a bag. The voice operation works through the bag. As Brian noted, we use them as a backup as they are not a replacement for a VHF radio. Both have their shortcomings.
