Chebacco Lake sessions start!

Come join us at Chebacco Lake Thursdays at 5pm. Practice strokes, rolls, rescues, falling out of your boat, or watching kingfishers. Rick Crangle and I will be there tonight to get the season started. Bring boat, paddle, skirt, PFD, and any new gear you want to test. Dress for immersion; dry suit or wet suit for now.

We meet at the boat ramp at the south end of the lake, and hang out in the cove to the left of the ramp. You can either get off 128 at Pine st (exit 16) and head north on the dirt road, or find Chebacco road off Rt 22 in Essex and avoid the dirt. No entrance fees. No rangers to kick us out at the end of the evening, but the mosquitoes do the job just fine.

Just posted this in Walden Pond thread too... I just had my first training in wet exits and self rescues! Need more practice. If I came to one of these, would it be possible to borrow someone's boat for this purpose? Or is that the kayaking equivalent of asking to borrow someone's underwear?

Matt, we occasionally hop into each others boats to try something different. It might help to know what size boat would fit you (LV, HV, etc). If you don't know, your height and weight will help determine that.

Thanks! I'll take what I can get, and it will be useful to watch experienced paddlers too as long as you're not all doing your thing 1000 yards from shore. My folding boat takes a fair bit of time to assemble and pack so it's not practical for short sessions like this.

I am a big guy, 6' 4", currently 228 pounds.

I can't make it tonight, but should be there next week. I don't know if I can bring my "extra" boat, but would be willing to share for the session. I will catch up with you next week and see if you can make it up there.

If i can figure it out, I am going to try to bring both the classic Cetus and a Boreal Epsilon 200 to play with. Do you have a spray skirt, and if so, what brand and size? I will see if it fits either or both boats. If not, we can see if my adjustable nylon skirt works. It is not the best, but it will do.

Unfortunately I don't (have a spray skirt). The Folbot has an open cockpit that precludes rolling--there's a spray deck for keeping out water but it's huge.

Let me know if you want me to bring my boat so you don't have to deal with bringing two...as long as I have it out of the water by 7 that will be enough time for it to dry before sunset. And I suspect using it will give you tremendous opportunities for mirth. It really is a different species of animal.

One last FYI in case I didn't mention it, I'm a big guy, 6' 4" and 225 pounds.

The Cetus might be a little snug as you would probably do better in a high volume boat, but the Epsilon is a big boat even for a medium volume, and you are still within the size range, so let's give it a shot. See you Thursday.

I just wanted to thank you all for going out of your way to help me last Friday, between bringing an extra kayak; the excellent advice and training; and the warm and friendly company. I've never felt so comfortable so quickly with new people, and I learned so much. Can't wait to come again.

Cathy is stuck at work (and so should I) and weather is looking dicey, so not going to make it tonight. Disappointed since i can't make it next week either.
