In the USA in 2009 H1N1 infected 20 Million Americans and killed 4K of them I believe? No media panic. No social panic. No social media mob for daring to color outside the lines. I have had enough of the media frenzy and only take the word of the medical community on Covid.

Today when we use language like "shelter in place" let us remember that is the language for active shooter situations. What message are we sending? Panic? Horde?

I have stayed home and laid low now for a couple weeks. I have my bleach sprayer and rags when I go out to the store. Soon I will be on the water solo with no regrets. I know of put ins not usually used.

When they closed the beaches to walking that was too much IMO.

Come on, man. I believe the domestic stats for H1n1 were 50-60 million infected and 10-12k deaths. That's a death rate of .0002.

The seasonal flu is .001.  That's 5 times more deadly than H1n1.

The Covid estimates (I emphasize estimates) are around .01. That's ten times worse than the flu, 50 times more deadly than H1N1.

The beaches have been closed because of the fear of a 70 degree day rolling through and everyone flocking to them.

Where are you getting your info?

  2. Hats off to you, Warren, for planning this. This sounds like it's going to the trip of a lifetime.

Are you using a digital or film camera? Just wondering about batteries.

How do you like the Ultralamina bag? That's the same bag I have, I haven't had a chance to use it yet.

Why do I feel like should be adding a comment or anecdote to this post to steer the discussion back to bears?

  3. On that note....

The intensity of Monday night's storm and the speed in which it developed has left me a bit gun-shy to head for an evening paddle this week. That was pretty intense.

  4. FWIW, a satellite only measures water temp in the top 1/8" or so. Any wind that mixes the water column shows as a reduction of surface temperature. Oftentimes, one will see the sat. image drop a few degrees as the seabreeze picks up.

That explains the drastic disparities between measurements that are only days apart on the Rutgers site. I thought that something didn't seem right.

The 55 and 56 degree field measurements sound much more accurate to me, I was in the water last night. They also are in line with a reasonable seasonal warming trend based on a measurement of 53 degrees in Essex basin almost 4 weeks ago.

  5. I just picked up a 2001 Orion that has the paddle recess on the back deck. Looks like you need a pretty flat blade for it to work. Mine has a strap for the blades.

    Chip,

Hit me up at <Moderator deleted per request> I'd like to hear more about your boat, I just picked up a '92 Orion myself, this past November.

    Best,

    Marc

PS Please reply relatively soon... I'm going to edit my email out of this post within the next couple hours.

  6. Hi all,

I have a surfing wetsuit and I'm currently looking at semi-dry, jackets and splashes to mitigate wind-chill and evaporative cooling. I'm trolling close-out sales, auctions, etc looking for deals so try-before-buy is generally out of the question. I should also mention that I have reservations about fitting or handling an item from a local retailer and then buying somewhere else.

Can anyone offer advice regarding sizing for Kokakat tops? I'm 6',180-185lbs,42" chest, 35" waist, 16" neck and 34" sleeves. Their sizing chart indicates a medium give or take and 5-10lbs on weight and an inch on the waist but I'm unsure as to whether the tops generally run large, small or spot-on?

The Endurance top from NRS looks like a contender as well. If anyone has any experience with that particular top, I'd like to hear about it. I'm really open to any suggestions/recommendations.

    Thanks you,

    Marc

  7. I spoke with the realtor today and that particular space is unlikely. He did say that he would inquire about a few other spaces that might be more suitable and get back to in a day or two. Hopefully he'll call back but I'm not holding my breath - I could almost hear the expression on his face when I answered his question about price range. I said it was short money, 10-20 kayaks at ~$20 apiece, probably $200-$300ish.
