  1. Thanks for all of the responses. Currently considering camping the first night on one of the islands to the north of IAH (avoiding mosquito hell island, thanks Pru), and staying at Duck harbor on day 2 to do some exploring. That avoids having to stay at Doliver but reservations have to be mailed in to reserve a spot at Duck Harbor campground and we're not yet sure about what date we're going to get there. That makes things trickier.

Definitely going to do some hiking while we're there.

  2. My friend and I are planning to paddle around Isle Au Haut in a week or two. I wanted to know if there are any must see islands to explore on our way out there. Are there any spots to avoid because of boat traffic or conditions? Feel free to PM me or send an email if the islands are private or whatever. I've done some research on this but I'm interested in people's opinions.

Also, does Doliver island seem like it would be a decent place to camp? From what I've read it seems like it could be a bit small and boring but it's in a convenient spot for going around Isle Au Haut.

    Thanks

Note: I am a MITA member. Yes, I've read the guidebook. Yes, I know about the policies regarding discussing private islands.

  3. Jeff,

The photo Doug posted is typical of high-ISO noise reduction done in camera. Is that what you're experiencing? Noise reduction is for the most part a selective blurring filter applied to the image. While noise reduction can be done in camera, post processing software will do a much better job of it. Also, once it's done in camera it can't be reversed.

  4. I may do the Cape Ann circumnav instead. I'll check forecasts Thursday and make up my mind.

Cool let me know. If the surf forecasts aren't looking good, I might not want to travel too far. But as I learned last night, surf forecasts aren't necessarily any good.

  5. Anyone up for a little traveling to do some surfing this weekend? I'm currently thinking Popham Beach. I haven't yet found a decent surf forecast for that area but current marine forecasts are saying 2-4 foot seas. Post your thoughts and interest here. As the weekend draws nearer we can get a better grasp on details.

  6. Do you want to plan to be on the water at 5:00? Current won't be too bad going out but will be quick and bumpy on the way back in. Looks like it will be windy in the beginning of the day and calming down by the time we get out there.

  7. From what I saw it looked like 6ft waves @ 6 seconds on Wednesday and then it would be tapering off on Thursday with a bit longer period. Hopefully that will make for better surfing.

Blaine, I've got the day off so I can get out there at just about any time that's good for you.

  8. I wish I could break away. Surf should be around 5-6 feet. Wind out of the south. Id' suggest you get at least 2 others to join you. This is no time of year to fool around without the safety of others close by. If a miracle happens where I can break away, I'll post again.

Yep, didn't want to go by myself. Went climbing instead. I'll be too busy to head out again until Sunday earliest.

  9. Anybody interested in doing some surfing from the usual spot off Seabrook Harbor tomorrow afternoon/evening? I've got most of the day free so I'm flexible. Looks like there will be some decent surf and I imagine there shouldn't be too many swimmers this time of year.

  10. You've received a lot of good advice. While my experience kayak camping is limited, my experience in sleeping in strange places without a roof is not. Your best bet is to go out camping with the bare essentials then fill in the gaps. Figure out what you need before you buy too much crap. You might be perfectly comfortable just stringing out a tarp and sleeping on your sprayskirt or you might need to bring every camping gadget imaginable to make your trip bearable.

    Dustin

  11. Another paddling opportunity popped up with one of my friends. Looks like I'm going to sit out tomorrow's surfing and do something a bit milder. I'm not sure I want to surf 7 foot waves at a beach that's likely to be crowded with swimmers. I hope you guys have fun.
