  1. Hi

Does anyone have any insight on this topic?  My annual MITA kayak camping trip is being sabotaged by the worst outbreak on record of the Browntail Moth Caterpillars.  Their airborne toxic hairs cause skin rash when they come in contact with skin or respiratory distress if breathed in.  The ranger on Warren Island has already reported campers with rashes.

    Thanks

  3. Santa brought 2 replacement Kokatat neck gaskets and now we need to get them done if we want to paddle anytime soon. Suz Hutchinson told me she'd be willing to do a workshop and demo if we get 10 attendees. Since Scott and I will attending, we only need 8 more. Is anyone else interested in seeing a demo for gasket replacement and learning how to care for your dry suit? I attended one of Suz's workshops a few years ago and it was very informative.

  4. I never got into using Pogies. A fellow paddler turned me onto the idea of using playtex gloves under neoprene paddling gloves. Just don't tuck them under the sleeve gasket of your dry suit or you may have a wet arm like I did last weekend. For the most part, the rubbergloves keep my fingers toastie. Some winter paddles the cold gets to my fingers no matter what I do but this way my hands are at least dry. that's my 2 cents

  5. There is Witch Creek, Odiorne Point State Park (fee to park in summer months, ample parking). Rt 1A, Rye, NH. Also I should mention the small parking area on the other side of the bridge, if you are tempted beware of high tide... it fills a considerable portion of the lot (although this is my preference, the closer to the road the better).

  6. Posting an email I received if anyone is interested in helping out.

    HI ,

My name is Richard Berard co-director for Fast forward Race.

I received your name from Dane Tullock at REI. They sponsor our triathlons here on the south shore.

We would like to know if you may have some members that would be willing to help monitor the swim portion of our Marsh Man

Triathlon at Duxbury beach on July 31st 7AM.

It is a sprint triathlon so you would be in the water for only about an hour.

Kayakers would not be involved with life saving. They will be placed to provide a course guide for the

athletes and to assist lifeguards and the harbor master spot any issues.

It is exciting to be on the water during the race. You get a birds eye view of the swim

that spectators on shore aren’t privy too!

We would pay your organization $25 for each kayaker, not to mention they all get

a nifty green tee shirt and have a great time.

Please let me know if you have interest and how many would attend.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

    Thank you very much!

    Richard Berard

  7. The party was a blast. We had a great turn out, awesome food and great friends. Thanks to everyone who helped out with pre-party prep/planning, decorating and also all the cooks for their fine cuisines that makes the party complete. I’d also like to recognize the generous businesses who donated items for the raffle to benefit the Maine Island Trail Association; Charles River Canoe & Kayak, Kokatat, Paddling.net, REI, Timberland.

If anyone if missing a white bowl(s), plate or purple spoon I have them in my possession and would be happy to reunite with their owners.

  9. Suzanne Hutchinson, our fellow paddler and local Kokatat rep will be contacting a drysuit workshop at the Gould Barn in Topsfield Mass, on Wednesday evening September 29th at 6:30 pm. She will be demonstrating how to replace neck and wrist gaskets and provide information on how to properly take care of your dry suit. This popular workshop is a "do not miss" for anyone who owns a drysuit or is thinking about purchasing one.

    Directions to Gould Barn:

From the south, take Rt. 1 north exit off of Route I-95. Follow that to Rt. 97 west into Topsfield. At the stop sign, the library will be on your left and a small side street immediately before the stop sign is on your right - that is East Common Street . Take a right onto this street and park in the lot on the right that is for the Emerson Center/Congregational Church.

From the north, take I-95 south to the Topsfield Rt. 97 exit. Proceed to Congregational Church on the right and Town Common on the left. Make a left turn onto Route 97 East, for 1/2 a second and then take a SHARP left onto East Common St and park in the lot on the right that is for the Emerson Center/Congregational Church.

There is some parking on the street or at the far left end of the church lot closest to the Barn.

  10. Boat Captain Says Piece Fell Off Memorial Bridge

Portsmouth Bridge High Priority For Replacement

A tour boat captain says a piece of the Memorial Bridge in Portsmouth fell into the river yards from his boat Monday afternoon.

Bob Hassold said he was steering his boat down the Piscataqua River near the 80-year-old bridge Monday when a piece of the bridge fell just as he was about to pass under it.

"I'm talking about a 4-foot diameter piece of metal, rusted metal, that fell off," he said. "It was a huge splash."

Hassold said the piece came off the stationary part of the bridge. He said he had four tourists on his boat at the time and is glad he didn't leave earlier than he did.

"If I had been downriver just a little bit further, it probably could have hit the top of the boat or the passengers on the boat," he said.

The Memorial Bridge, one of the three main bridges in Portsmouth that connect the city to Kittery, Maine, is the state's No. 1 red-listed bridge, meaning it is a high priority for repair or replacement. On Wednesday, state officials inspected the area where Hassold said he saw the piece fall.

"Certainly, it's well known that the Memorial Bridge is in rough shape," said Bill Boynton of the Department of Transportation. "It's our No. 1 red-listed bridge that we continue to monitor very closely for safety and for structural purposes."

This summer, New Hampshire legislators toured the rusted bridge before pledging $45 million to replace it, half of what's needed. On the Kittery side, local businesses are now displaying "Save the Bridge" banners, hoping their state kicks in the other half.

But Maine officials are awaiting a survey due out in the next couple of weeks before making any decisions.

Hassold said he'll keep his fingers crossed in the meantime.

"They should really stop doing surveys on this bridge," he said. "They know it's falling apart. How many more surveys do they have to do?"

DOT officials have yet to confirm whether a piece of the bridge is now missing. But they said it's still safe enough to stay open for now.

  11. This guy launched yesterday from Wisconsin. Jake Stachovak is paddling the "Great Loop Route or Great Circle Loop" and plans on taking 10 months to complete. Looks like he'll be passing through our area in May. Here is a link to a news story, his blog and map route. Cool stuff, I wish him lots of luck!
