  1. A trial scheduled for this week went away, so I can make it, and plan to! Gary: I thought you were going to be launching by 9:00, and would have joined you for that, but I see your latest post about launching at 10:00. I'll do either, my only concern being that there is a very big mud flat at Sandy Point at low tide.

  2. I'm going to try to get there to join you, too. Sorry about the late notice.

    If anyone going happens to live near Bradford, or along the way so that carpooling would work, please post here. I'll check the site by 8:00 a.m., if I'm going to make it at all. Of course if I end up sleeping in, well, you all have fun.

  3. Graham; That looks like it's just gelcoat damage, though I can't tell from the photos. I can patch the 'glass for you this week if you want to bring the boat by my house after work some day. Looks like a very small job. May even be time to add a keel strip if you like. Call me at 207-833-0601 Monday--I'm up at Orr's Island for the weekend--or at 978-388-1516 after Monday evening--I'll be back home in Bradford (Haverhill).

  4. Gary;

    Count me in. I will likely stay over on Orr's Island on Thursday and launch from near the Cribstone Bridge and meet up with the rest of the fleet somewhere along the way to Jewell--probably Crow or Bangs if that's where you all stop on your way out. Anyone else who is inclined to launch from Orr's is welcome to join me (Peter??). I could change and simply launch with everyone else, depending on how things shake out. Will keep in touch.

  5. Looks like I'll be joining you. Looks like maybe 4 or 5 paddlers total. My wife and I just booked a couple nights at the Sandy Point resort in Alton, so she'll drop me off at Weir's, and after we finish paddling together, I'll paddle down to Sandy Point.

    The foliage should indeed be awesome; worth coming off the salt water for!

  6. Is anyone else thinking of coming along? Ed?? So far it looks like just Mary and maybe me.

    I told Mary separately I would probably come, though I am not yet certain I can get Friday off. Current plan is to launch from Lookout Point on the west shore of Harpswell, ME, and camp most likely on one of the Goslings about 2.7 miles away. Whaleboat is an option of Goslings don't work for any reason. Launch on Friday, but launch time still open. Goslings as a base leave us all sorts of options for day trips, or half-day trips, from there.

    We'd welcome at least a few more.

  7. Count me in. I plan on launching from near my house at the Cribstone bridge on Orr's Island and joining up at Bang's Is. or perhaps intercepting you along the coast of Chebeague. Anyone interested in launching with me and parking at my house is welcome.

  8. The paddle was every bit as scenic, and perhaps slightly more challenging paddling conditions, as Peter's report makes it out to be.

    The 6+ foot swells were no big deal on their own, though they were mostly steeper than the word "swells" usually implies, but they were coming more or less from the southwest, and the one foot or so wind-driven waves were coming more from the northwest, criss-crossing over and on top of the swells; add to that the rebounding swells from not far away--this is all steep rock cliff for the waves to bounce off of, not sandy beaches--and the refracting stuff going every which direction from the countless invisible ledges, and you got some interesting "lumpy mashed potatoes" in places. Interesting and fun.

    Perhaps most amazing was that the start and finish were so nearly dead flat calm, and the stuff in the middle was such a contrast, that this paddle served up about as much variety as one could expect.

    Here is the course map on satelite image.

    I have a home in that area, and would be happy to join anyone who cares to come up to paddle anywhere in the area. I will of course post fro "private Trips" in the area from time to time.

  9. Did you go out ?

    That would hve been truly gutsy, or plain dumb. The plan is to go out on Sunday.

    Weather.com for the Orr's Island area still looks like a decent day for paddling, as long as you don't mind a bit of a chill and some wind. Their hour-by-hour forecoast is below.

    If we do as planned, we'll be launching at about 1/2 tide, and heading outbound with the ebbing tide with sunny skies, and a decent wind of about 16 mph on our right side, maybe a bit behind us; by the time we turn aroound for the return trip, the tide will have reversed and the wind will still be from about the same direction but down to closer to 10 mph. Along the planned route, there are only a few places where we'll be able to duck into the lee for a short time. Of course, once at the launch site, we can assess conditions and change the route altogether for a pretty well-protected route if we prefer.

  10. Here is waht the trip MIGHT look like. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1427560

    I've done it a few times before, and it's a scenic paddle. Obviously, it is really exposed to westerly winds, but if it looks like it will be windy, we can start at the same spot but head west, or even do a circumnavigation of Great Island if we're up to it. Haven't checked the mileage of that, but as I recall from doing it a few years ago, it too might be around 18 miles. Meanwhile, weather.com isn't even mentioning winds in its forecast for the area for Sunday.

    I HAD forgotten about the change of clocks, so if it's going to be dark by 5:00, we'll just have to monitor our progress and adapt as needed. No rule that reaching Small Point is a must, though we'd love to do it if possible.

    Anyway, Peter B. and I will be there. Maybe some of you, too?

    My house is not far from the launch site (10 miles or so), so it would be a good spot for stopping over to change, eat, warm up by the fireplace, etc. And Cook's Lobster House is right by the house, too, just in case.

    10:30AM Launch from Cundy’s Harbor ( small peninsula between Bailey/Orrs Island and Cape Small) and island/ledge-hop (Jenny, Long, Flag, Jamison and Wood Is. Ledges ) to Cape Small and back. Est. 12-18 Naut. Miles , Level 3+. Pace and mileage flexible. If strong NW winds may alter course to look for some lee. We'll plan to stay warm and dry but will dress for the swim. CAM all the way.

    If interested, post here or by e- mail. pbrady@neaq.org Launch site and directions can be shared as plans come together.

  11. Sunday is looking like a great day for paddling. Anyone interested in joining me for a L3-3+ paddle starting from the cribstone bridge at the southern end of Orr's Island (Harpswell, ME)? Drive time an hour and 45 minutes from the Hampton toll booth on Rte 95. It's pretty much the center of Casco Bay, giving access to areas you almost never reach from Portland's East Prom. Expect maybe 12-15 miles total, depending on conditions and where we all decide to go. Options include island hopping, circumnavigating any number of islands or sounds, etc., again depending on what we decide at launch time. Expect launch at 10:00 a.m. My house is very nearby for before and after, if desired.

  12. Al;

    I'll be on Orr's Island (Harpswell, mid-Casco Bay) again this weekend in case you want to join me for some paddling up there. If you want to work a SnG around that, feel free. Or if nothing pans out and you just want to come up. I can be reached weekdays at the office at 978-373-9336, and weekends (when I'm in Maine) at 207-833-0601.

  13. What an AWESOME trip report and photos. Thank you SOOOO much for posting. Of course, now I'm jealous, as I've been wanting to get up that way for years now, but haven't yet managed it. This will be a great incentive as this is now a "must do", not just a "want to do". I wonder if any others from the group are thinking of putting together a trip to the Saguenay for next year?

  14. By the way, my schedule for the weekend is fluid, and I won't necessarily be launching from Winslow Park at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday unless I know some of you are coming. So if you plan to show and go, please let me know. Once we know for sure this is "on", the more the merrier and additional RSVPs are unnecessary, though still appreciated.

  15. Tides update. The morning low tides in South Freeport are at 8:30 on Sat. and 9:20 on Sunday. So a 10:00 a.m. launch on Saturday should be OK. Sunday may have to wait until 10:30 or so. Landing should be no probelm, as evening low tides aren't until 9:00 and 10:00 respectively.

  16. Hi Folks;

    Posting my first show & go private trip. My wife and I will be camping at Winslow Park in South Freeport, ME, this weekend, and I will be kayaking from there to various spots in the northeastern quadrant of Casco Bay. Perhaps up around Lower and Upper Goose Islands, Birch, etc.; perhaps as far east as Harpswell or even Haskell and Bailey Island; perhaps south and east to Eagle, Cliff, Jewell, etc. Conditions vary a lot, so expect Level 3 to 3+ with a slim chance of encountering some L4 conditions. Expect a minimum of 12 miles of paddling each day, and probably not more than 16 or so. Probable average around 3.5 to 4 knots. Of course, if conditions get sloppy, mileage and speed would likely go down. Likely launch time 10:00 am each day (depending on tides), with return landing between 4 and 6 pm. All these details depend on who is there, what the conditions are, and what people decide to do, but I thought I'd let you know what I am hoping for.

    This is a gorgeous area to paddle in. IMHO far nicer than the lower part of Casco Bay from Portland to Peak's and Jewell and Chebeague. Winslow Park is perhaps the nicest campground I've seen in my limited camping experience (much nicer than Recompense, for example). It's right on the ocean/bay, has a small swimming beach, park and playground areas, etc. It's also very reasonably priced. It's only limitation is that that portion of the bay drains to mud for about an hour or so on either side of low tide, so we have to plan launch and landing times accordingly. I haven't checked the tides there yet, but will soon. I am also looking into how many campsites are still available at Winslow for any of you who cnoose to stay overnight to paddle both days. Of course, there is also LLBean and tons of shopping and restaurants in Freeport.

    Please let me know ASAP if you'd be interested, especially if you want me to reserve a campsite for you. (I believe Winslow allows 2 or possibly 3 tents on a single site, and the sites are pretty big).

  17. i'll be there by 1830 (that's still 6:30 despite my screwin it up last week!) and we'll do rescues, rolls, strokes...just messin' around really.

    ....and if anyone has a DIGITAL video recorder and were to bring it....we could take some vid of folks strokes and such and then you can see what your doing as opposed to what you think your doing. it's a really good tool and a little alarming!

    I'll try to make it, depending on how my day goes. I could use some practice.
