  1. 2019 Midcoast Sea Kayak Rendezvous

For the last six years, as the color of the leaves signals the fall season in Maine, a little event has been inconspicuously taking place in the Midcoast region of Maine. A collection of really good coaches, an amazingly diverse environment all within easy access and some amazing participants have nurtured this event to quietly become a place where friends are made, personal skills are developed and a Community has grown!

On October 25-27, 2019, the seventh iteration of the Rendezvous will take place on the Georgetown Peninsula in the Midcoast region of Maine. While many coaches will be returning as in past years, new coaches are eager to join the Community! The Coaches page will be updated once all coaches are confirmed. If you’d like more information about the Rendezvous, check out www.midcoastseakayakrendezvous.com. If
you’d like to register, please go to
https://www.midcoastseakayakrendezvous.com/registration and complete the Skills assessment form before registering.

This event promises to be another great time. We welcome newcomers to the Community! Hope to see you there!

If you have specific questions, contact me at john@seacliffkayakers.com

  2. Morning Folks,

The 2015 schedule is unfolding nicely and will be posted soon. There are already a number of events posted, but already full. If you have specific dates, please contact me as soon as possible.

The dates for the 2015 Rendezvous are Oct 10-12. All the coaches from last year are back plus a number of new coaches who have asked to come. We may not have a lot of fanfare or fancy videos, but what we do have is the finest, most qualified group of coaches possible who want to come because they know the participants are the best! We already are better than half full from last year's participants, so contact them to get a feel of what to expect. Check http://midcoastseakayakrendezvous.com/. Contact me for more specific information or to register.

    It's small, but it's good!

    Safe Journeys,

    John

  4. Good Morning Folks,

I trust everyone has had a safe winter.

The details for the 2014 Midcoast Sea Kayak Rendezvous are being finalized, and it's looking like another great opportunity to get three days of coaching from some of the finest coaches in the country, if not the world. We've learned some things from the feedback of the first Rendezvous and are making changes to assure that this year is an even better learning experience. We've already had 10 folks from last year sign up, which is great. All the coaches from last year will be there, along with a few others being sorted out. For more information check Midcoast Sea Kayak Rendezvous,http://midcoastseakayakrendezvous.com/.

The schedule for the season is filling in with a variety of opportunities, http://www.seacliffk...m/Calendar.html. As always, if there is something that you, or a group of friends, want to work on, contact me.

    Safe Journeys.

  6. The leaves up here are beginning their annual transformation, pumpkins have been appearing on door steps and the mornings are a bit cooler than they have been. It's been another great year on the water with the chance to paddle familiar and unfamiliar waters with both familiar faces and many new ones as well! The next month will wiz by with a number of advanced trainings, 4Star assessments and 5Star trainings. It will be november before you know it. I don't have many boats to sell this fall, but the ones listed are all in good to excellent condition. Take a look at the 2012 Boat Sale page on the website, http://www.seacliffk..._Boat_Sale.html and contact me for photos or further information. john@seacliffkayakers.com

  7. Good afternoon All,

It's been quite a winter on the Maine Coast this year. The wise among us know the fury that March can bring, so let's hope the lion decides not to roar this year.

The season starts earlier every year. I'm off to Golden Gate Kayak Symposium/Southeast Kayak Symposium/Kayak Camp over the next three weeks; back for a short bit, then it's The Southwest Kayak Symposium, Baja and Wales before being ready to get on the water here in Maine.

There is quite a buzz from the folks at P&H about the new boats, a new skeg design, and some new ideas in the works. You can keep up to date on any developments at http://phpaddlers.com/. As always, all the demo boats are available to try in real conditions.

I'm looking forward to traveling with my just arrived four piece Cyprus from Werner Paddles. Danny Mongo is the man! If you are traveling, this option saves a ton on luggage charges.

The schedule is slowly sorting itself out, and I wanted to make you all aware of the early season courses.

May 7-11 Sea Kayak Guide Training- BCU 4Star Leader Training/Review, http://www.seacliffk...Leadership.html

The course is a blend of land based workshops and on-water practical sessions; since our goal is to develop guides who are proficient in a variety of sea states the schedule will be dynamic and we will be accessing a variety of on-water venues. The majority of on-water sessions will be scenario driven and taught in the context of skills development tours, where participants will function as the instructor/guide. Participants will have ample opportunity for self assessment in addition to instructor and peer feedback. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to assess for the BCU Coastal Navigation and Tidal Planning Course.

  8. May 7-8 Wilderness First Aid H2O, http://www.seacliffkayakers.com/First_Aid.html

Backcountry injuries and illness do not always happen in the woods or on mountains but can occur on rivers, lakes and in open ocean environments. While these injuries and illnesses share commonalties with those experienced in other environments the prevention, management, mode of treatment and evacuation can be quite different. Therefore, SOLO has adapted the Wilderness First Aid curriculum to better suit the needs of recreational and professional paddlers.

This is SOLO's twenty-ninth year offering its workshops in Wilderness First Aid. Designed specifically for groups and their leaders, this 16-hour (2-day) program addresses the prevention and management of outdoor related injury and illness to include long-term care, evacuation procedures, patient management in transition zones (where the water meets the land) and group management. All SOLO instructors are experienced rescue personnel with extensive outdoor experience and have been selected not only for their expertise in emergency medicine and rescue, but also for their teaching skills.

Classroom lectures and discussions are reinforced with intensive practical work, scenarios and problem-solving exercises. The emphasis is always on hands-on experience therefore, scenarios are an important part of this training. Once again, Todd Wright will be teaching this course. It is not to be missed!

  11. It has been an exciting season here in Boothbay. I want to take this opportunity to thank all the great folks I have worked with this year. While there are still some on water courses scheduled between now and the first snowfall; and maybe after, it's time to clean out the garage.

Our end of the season sale goes from today until the official Veterans Day, Nov 11. Our demo fleet is in exceptional condition this year. We have a few retail boats as well. We will offer special pricing on any special order P&H boats, Kokatat clothing, Werner paddles or any of the other products we carry. Contact me for a list of boats and details on pricing.

    Thanks.

  12. Good morning All,

It's been a haul, but thanks to the help of some very special people, the new website is up, and this years schedule is posted, http://www.seacliffkayakers.com. There is still some tweaking, but I hope to have things sorted soon. Check the Sale Locker regularly as things will come and go with no regularity. As always, if you have a group that wants to work on specific skills not on the schedule, contact us.

The spring has done a nice job warming the water, but Immersion is still our greatest worry. Be safe.

I'll be at the P&H booth at the Kittery Paddlesport Show this weekend and hope to catch up with folks.

  14. Hi All,

We just finished up our 3rd Annual Sea Kayak Camp session on Hunting Island, SC. As usual there was fun to be had, and we all learned a bit.

We will have a Northeast Camp this fall on Nantucket Island from October 3rd to the 6th. Many folks have already expressed interest in a Camp on Nantucket, so we expect this will fill quickly. If you are interested, contact kayakcamp@earthlink.net.

I think Jason has some photos of the most recent Camp if folks are interested.

    Thanks.

    John

  15. Gene,

I had the opportunity to paddle the Capella 167 last week in Wales. I surfed it, played at The Bitches, and paddled distances along the coast. This is a great boat. The hull is a stretched version of the 161 which has been accepted very well as the update of the 163. The cockpit has been lengthened to accomodate longer femurs such as mine. The quality of construction is superb.
