djlewis
Interesting visualizations here... http://fvcom.smast.umassd.edu/research_pro...simulation.html These definitely show, and kinda explain, why the tides in Nantucket and Vineyard Sounds work the way they do, which is against intuition, and the opposite of Long Island Sound and Buzzards Bay. In particular, it looks to me like Nantucket Sound tides are the result of refraction of tides from Massachusetts Bay and Wilkinson Basin, around the Outer Cape. In other words, Nantucket Sound is a big eddy off of the western end of the Gulf of Maine, channeled by the Cape and perhaps also by Georges Bank. Thanks to Cheryl of Albany for the link. --David.
