Introduction to Sea Kayaking

In this course we will cover the basics of kayaking from boat fit to clothing, what to do in case of capsize, and how to make your boat do what you want it to do. Instruction will cover components of a sea kayak, how to move it off the water, what to wear, and basic safety gear. We'll spend plenty of time on the water learning how to move forwards, backwards, and sideways. You'll learn how to turn your kayak and how to perform a wet-exit. We'll address what's needed to start off right, and we'll also have time to just paddle and have some fun on the water. Lodging will be at Knubble Bay Camp with two breakfasts and Saturday dinner provided. Kayak rentals available from local outfitter who delivers to the camp. Trip Rating: No experience necessary.

Leader: Dave Corbin

Transition to Sea Kayaking

If you have been mostly exploring flatwater in your kayak but want to try something a bit more challenging, join us for a weekend of ocean paddling where you'll get some exposure to tidal currents, waves, and open water along the Maine coast, all with the support of experienced paddlers. We'll spend time discussing traveling safely on the water, and will offer paddling feedback to those who are interested. Saturday afternoon will include an optional rescue practice session and gear talk. We'll cover roughly 7-9 miles on Saturday and 5-6 miles on Sunday. Lodging will be at Knubble Bay Camp with two breakfasts and Saturday dinner provided. Kayak rentals available from local outfitter who delivers to the camp. Trip Rating: Level 1 (see amckbc.org/trips for Level descriptions).
