I am figuring that his e-mail was hacked. SuzIts worth noting that email is easily forged. It doesn't require compromise of the email account. If the government and corporations didn't make it difficult, it would be normal to sign all data/email with an encrypted signature using a private/public key set and we would be able to authenticate the source of the data/email.
